I've gone naked forever and never had a cracked screen. I too am skeptical, but never tried it myself. I did get minor scratches, so that's the only reason I would get one.

Reading people say this is starting to annoy me, it's like saying 'I haven't worn a seatbelt all my life and I haven't died yet, so it must be safe!'.

The question was whether tempered glass actually adds a layer of protection to an iPhone's screen, and from my experience it does.

The best protection for your phone isn't a glass screen protector or a phone case. It's using common sense to not let your screen get scratches, and making use of your skills of not dropping the phone out of your hands. Just like you would never let a baby fall out of your hands.

Thanks for this useful information, but it's also common sense (for most) to utilize accessories that are available to us, i.e cases and screen protectors, that's what this sub-forum is all about, isn't it?

I'm kind of skeptical about whether they really shatter instead of the glass of the iPhone, it seems like it could still break the screen too.
All drops are not the same. Tempered glass may help in one specific instance and not in another. I don't recommend counting on tempered glass as impact protection. If impact protection is desired then get a case actually designed to absorb impact. Despite any claims, only consider a screen protector as scratch protection.

Even then such a case may not protect the device in all situations. These product are there just to provide some mitigation. Like any type of security if you really want the best possible coverage you need to layer multiple products (e.g. maybe a screen protector, case and insurance).

Best is always highly subjective. "Common sense and skills" may be sufficient for you but they may not be for the next. Each needs to use whatever solutions are suited to the individual. This is not a one-size-fit-all matter no matter how people post such tunnel visioned opinions.

Accidents happen.

Any broad, sweeping generalization based on anecdotal evidence is flawed and popular ones always brought up in threads like this tend to be:
  • I've never used one and have never had scratches/damage.
  • I've used one, dropped mine and it was fine so they obviously work.
  • I've used one, dropped mine, had scratches/damage so they obviously don't work.
  • I've never dropped mine. I'm always careful so it's not a problem.
The thing is that regardless of the conclusion reached is that these are based on insufficient sample data and assume a trend based on that. Again, no two incidents are guaranteed to be the same. While X may have happened in the past it may not in the future. While Y may not have happened in the past it may happen in the future. Past performance is not an indicator of future performance.

All anyone can really do is select the solution(s) that the individual sees as worthwhile and people will always vary in what they are willing and not willing to do to protect their products. Do what works for you but don't assume that everyone else has to adhere to the same solution(s) as you. And never conflate "I have never experienced" with "does not happen".

That's correct, although why not use both and have the best protection possible?

No one said that cases & screen protectors guarantee 100% protection for your phone.

The glass protector that I'm using definitely protected my 6S Plus after I recently dropped it face down from pocket height. Both the screen and protector were fine. Here's a link to a thread where I posted my screen protector as well as some pictures. It's a true Edge to Edge glass screen protector which is hard to find for the newer iPhones. They usually stop at the screen itself. https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/screen-protectors.1934119/

Does this work well with cases? Like do the wrap around edges mess with where the case meets the glass?

I was thinking of getting the spigen thin fit for my iPhone 6, and I also have a spigen tough armor case for iPhone 6. Any knowledge to whether these will cause problems or not?

No, neither cases will pull this screen protector up. I'm using the Spigen clear thin bumper case now, and I also use it with my Speck cases. Both of them are fine. I just ordered Apples Midnight Blue Leather case off eBay which hopefully will work also.

Okay, so the extra glass doesn't obstruct the cases at all? That's kind of surprising tbh.

No, if it is lined up just right. It does not obstruct the case.
I got the exact screen protector you suggested and I love it except I don't think the adhesive is strong enough, on the very edges of my phone there is a lighter tone where it didn't fully adhere. I can push it down and it will look fine but immediately after it will peel up again to where it was.

After trying a new case from Amazon yesterday I will say that I was wrong about being able to use any case with this protector. Because this one pulled up the lower right corner of the screen protector. Luckily I was able to get it back down before it stayed that way. I think it happened because the protector comes to the edge of the screen and the case overlaps too much. Now I'm hoping that it will work with the Apple leather case that I ordered from eBay because I won't be able to return it if not. I don't have any trouble with my screen protector peeling up now that I removed that case, though.

Yeah that sadly isn't too much of a surprise, the adhesive seems a tad weak with these screen protectors. The glass didn't fully adhere on the left and right sides of my phone, as you can see with the lighter parts of the glass. I also did a bad job and got dust under the screen :(

Did you get the Black one? I would call their customer service number and ask them to send you a replacement. That looks like it might be defective and from what I have read, they are good about replacing them for customers. My screen protector adhered perfectly the first time I applied it. There were no bubbles at all. I did get a speck of dust which I was able to get out with just a small piece of tape.
I just received my Apple midnight blue leather case in the mail and I'm happy to report that it works perfectly fine with this screen protector. It didn't pull the edges of it up at all.

This is how the glass protector looks on my 6S Plus. I think it shows that it did adhere very well to the screen.

Yeah I got the black one... I will look into it.

My wife got a iphone 6 and they put a glass screen protector on at the store and there was a small crack on it within a month. I thought it was the screen but when I peeled it off the screen was fine. I've noticed far fewer cracked screens on my friends phones since about the introduction of the iPhone 5 so It may be that new Gorilla glass is responsible or maybe the glass screen protectors, hard to say. But the glass ones feel much better than the previously available plastic ones and don't get cruddy like the plastic ones did. So I say - It couldn' t hurt to use the glass protectors, especially at the cost of the phones, which I hate to admit are worth it.

What is all of your experiences with tempered glass screen protectors? I'm kind of skeptical about whether they really shatter instead of the glass of the iPhone, it seems like it could still break the screen too.

I want to get a slimmer case for my iPhone, the spigen thin fit in black for my iPhone 6 space gray. However I wouldn't feel comfortable with screen protection with that case, so I'm considering tempered glass but I'm new to it.

Anyone else use this combination of accessories on their iPhone? Would you recommend it? What would be the best glass screen protector for me to get if I choose to use one?
[doublepost=1508030562][/doublepost]I had a iPhone and me and my girlfriend got in a fight so she hit my iPhone 6 n shattered the screen so i tossed hers not meaning to actually break it. I had tampered glass and she had that cheap plastic covering that does with it. We go to metro and only my glass was broke and her phone which was also a iPhone 6 was destroyed. So I always 100% refer it.

It’s hit or miss as with cases.

I’ve seen a screen shatter with an otterbox. I’ve personally dropped my phone a few years ago from ear height with no case or screen protector onto concrete face down and didn’t have a scratch.

I think for sure though the tempered glass screen protector will shatter in circumstances the actual phone screen may have survived.

To me I use them to prevent scratches. That they definitely do.

About a year ago I dropped my 7 Plus to concrete floor from waist level. Had tempered glass on it and the tempered glass shattered, but not a single mark on the screen after I peeled off the tempered glass.

I used too swear by tempered glass protectors and after seeing this thread pop back up I took mine off and cleaned the screen and frankly.... it’s not getting another screen protector. Living on the edge I am! Honestly it does have a better feel without a tempered glass protector and I am very careful with my phone so world be damned I’m not endorsing hem unless you live or work in an environment that would benefit your device to have one.

I'll add a story that took place yesterday involving my Pelican Protector case, Tempered Glass cover, and iPhone8.

Placed the phone in a bad spot on the car while performing some work in the garage. When the car hatch opened up, the phone slide down in between the hatch and the car body. Needless to say, the phone was squished upon closing the hatch, which is an electrically controlled action. The phone was pinched in the lower left corner and popped out of the case, but suffered no damage.

The case has a dent in it, the tempered glass protector was trashed, the hatch has a slight ding in it with paint damage. The phone shows no sign of wear or damage!

Generally, Yes. Tempered Glass do protect your phone original screen from breaking in many cases. However, it also depends on how much it has covered your screen. Sometimes the tempered glass does not really cover the screen and leave out a border or equivalent space from all sides. In that case, aside drop might really impact the screen of your phone and may turn it into shatters of glass. A frontal face drop might not break it though. So, my advice would be to look for a protector that covers the most amount of your screen, look for 9H hardness.

I haven't dropped my current phone, but my iPhone 8 Plus had a tempered glass screen protector and was inside a Pitaka MagCase and was dropped twice from about 3' onto the kitchen tile. The phone was fine but the screen protector was cracked. I don't know if the phone's screen would've cracked instead if the screen protector wasn't on it, but I thought I'd share my experience.

I use to rock a glass protector on the front and back of my phone with only a metal bumper I got for about $10 on Amazon... the glass definitely works. It does crack easier than the standard glass so it can be worrisome when you start to see cracks on the glass... but every time I remove the glass the screen is perfect... I just recently went to a full clear skin around the front back and sides of the phone now because I love the naked look.. I just have to be more carefulo_O
