I left my iphone 15 Manchester (UK) airport yesterday at the security check points. We have located the phone, but arranging for it to be picked up and shipped to me will take a few days. I have bullied my nephew into lending me his X (phone) for a few days. Can I get a SIM card and activate it with old number for a few days. Also I don’t want to change the apps etc on his phone.

I wouldn't see why not. If you get a SIM card from your cellular provider or an old SiIM card you have from a previous phone the phone/messaging should work fine.

The only issue is that the iPhone X can't run iOS 17, so any backup you have made won't be able to be restored.
But since you seem to just want to have a phone and are keeping his apps and so on I guess its not a problem.

Remember tho, SMS and so on will be on his phone and backup.

Edit: check with your networkprovider of you can use esim, that way you can get the same number as on your old phone.
Edit2: On a second thought, might be messy if you return the phone and need to activate the old one.

iPhone X doesn't have esim capability
