Apple isn't the only OEM that pushes CPU's to their heat design limitations. I've seen Dell Atom and HP Core2Duo equipped machines reach very high temperatures to the point where they throttle themselves to 50% of their actual clock speed.

All Apple is doing is pushing the CPU to Intell's recommended maximum temperature. On top of what Apple allows it, Intell provides an additional few degrees of heat that is above what they publish as the maximum allowable temperature.

Thank goodness we aren't living in the 90's or early/mid 2000's anymore where such excessive heat could cause problems as the machine aged.

Ummmmmmm, no.

These are new processors. They are designed to take the heat. In order to achieve maximum performance they have to increase the juice and hence the heat, especially considering the "turbo boost' feature.

The MBAs with i core processors have been out a year now, and I haven't seen any widespread reports of CPU fires, shutdowns, meltdowns, etc. Actually, I haven't seen ANY, but I wouldn't discount the possibility. But this just tells me THERE IS NO PROBLEM.

Was just going to go digging for the Datasheets myself. Thank you.

The fan was running full blast. In the screenshot you can see it is at 6500rpm.

I could capture it in F but yeah, 100c = 212f.

Sean,
In this video here https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1385097/
The guy is using a 2012 13" i5. He got the CPU temp up to 105c. By opening 25 videos at once.

Any chance we could ask you to try the same test and see where the temps get to?

Also, I would be interested to hear what Apple Care says about the thunder bolt sound cutting out.

I just got my new 2012 MBA 13inch and it was up near 100c when I playing some flash videos but the fan was only at 3000 rpm I was scared the fan was broken or something but then it shot up to 6500 rpm and cooled down to 70. Has any else noticed the fan only kicking in really late?

How was the sound on that new fan? Is it noticeably quieter than the 2011 model?

it is very quiet(I don't hear anything) when doing web/office.
but when playing diablo3, it goes to 6500 RPM, then it is pretty loud. and CPU temp is close to 100c.

Only 1 flash video causing cpu to raise to 100c? I think this is too much.

How is the temperature of buttom enclosure? This is very important to me since I'm going to use my MBA mostly on my lap.

Well, considering that 105C is the point of no return (automatic shut down), I would say that 100C is INDEED too hot.

And yes, I've also reached 103C while encoding a long video using HandBrake...

In the words of Uncle Ben

"with great power, comes great heat (or responsibility i forget how it goes)"

I believe at 105C the CPU will throttle itself before shutting down. Though I'm not sure if anyone here has actually gotten theirs that high to verify?

I just got my 2012 MacBook Air (13", maxed out). I love this thing, it is so fast I kind of don't believe it. One thing I have noticed is the temperature on the thing.

I've routinely gotten it up into the high 90's (celsius), and when I play Starcraft 2 or do other more intensive things (work on large sound project in Logic or GarageBand, etc) the temp goes up to 101-103°C. I've never seen it go higher than 103, so I think its probably designed this way, as these new Ivy bridge procs max out at 105°c.

Still makes me nervous to play a several hour game session with the temp sitting at 103°C.

The metal bezel above the F1-F6 keys of course gets super hot to the touch, and the bottom gets very hot, and the fan is loud.

I still haven't found official confirmation from Apple or Intel that 103°C isn't too hot. If anyone has any other information to add, I'd appreciate it.

Mind you, it is a new computer. It means that it needs some time for all the parts and chemicals to settle (aka burn in). Like when building a computer yourself, when you apply thermal paste it takes a while for it to settle. In that time the temperature can be high and might differ from time to time but will drop eventually and become stable. If you read the manual of the thermal paste and the cooler/heatsink you'll read more about this.

I wonder if the topicstarter still has the high temperature as in the first post or if the temperature has dropped a bit.
