Go for it. The stock 2.8 Octo is a monster of a computer. It basically handles anything you can throw at it and then crushes whatever is left.

The system's coming in tomorrow which sucks because I have work in the morning... then I have class in the afternoon and only ~1 hour in between time between the two... and I have 2 midterms :(

But its coming... I get to spend time with it on Friday! :D Now my poor bike will feel neglected but its been so windy I haven't had much of a chance to ride it.

Apple refurb store this morning has all four models of the previous gen listed, from the single quad 2.8 up to the dual 3.2's.

I went with the previous generation octo 2.8 and am VERY pleased that I did:

saved $1000 (more after I sold my old G5)
VERY fast (as fast as I need)
minimal angst

Go for it.

I went with the 2.93GHz 8-Core.

2.93GHz Nehalem Mac Pro outperformed the eight-core Xserve by at least 50 percent. Straight-ahead integer and floating point scores were comparable to those of other Intel Core 2 systems at similar clock speeds, which is to be expected considering the microarchitecture is largely unchanged. However, the Nehalem Mac Pro's aggressive power management let it handle the same workload with less power.

My Mac Pro came! Its a lot quieter then I expected. I cannot hear any noise with it being on. I'm setting it up right now, the wires are a piece of **** to manage. :(

So I have 3 packages coming, all from FedEx... yet the driver said he doesn't have the other 3... so what.. 3 trucks are gonna come by my house? wtf?

Apparently, 3 trucks did come lol.

First truck dropped off the Mac Pro. An hour later, Truck 2 came... by the time the driver got out of his truck, truck 3 came. It was pretty funny. All was FedEx too

ayeying... your picture is reversed.

Also, what are those monitors?

I know. I still haven't figured out how to mirror the image on photo booth yet.

Its a Dell E207FWP monitor (1680x1050), and some random HDTV that my dad bought but no one ever uses so I took it.

thanks for the informative dialogue!

I am trying to narrow down my choices and this string has been helpful. After opting for a new iMac, I kept agonizing that I would miss the old tower and it's flexibility. Now that I have read the comments here I am convinced to look for a late 2008 2.8 or 2.93GHz Mac Pro, and to look for it every morning on the Apple Refurbished store site. I am convinced that I can find a killer Mac Pro tower for about the same that I would pay for the high end iMac, and it will last me longer into the future (light graphics and video, some blender and secondlife, that's it).
- if anyone is still watching this, one question please;
- Can anyone tell me what the best or latest graphics card is that I could buy to upgrade a refurbished, late 2008, 2.8 or 2.93 GHz Mac Pro? thanks.

Best now is 4870. They are coming out with the gt285.

4870 can go into the 08 model, unsure of 285. 09 can handle both.
