anyone else have the urge or has been crazy enough to do it with previous models? does the glass tend to get scratched any faster without the use of Smart Cover or screen protector?

I have done this a lot with all my iPads (since gen 1) and never a issue. I do use the oem Smart Cover. My kids have always used my iPads without any case since they were three years old and never a issue. iPads are tough.

I'm thinking of just getting a Smart Cover as well. I really love the feel of this new design and would not want it trapped in a case of some sort..

I use my iPad Air 2 naked, but then tuck it safely inside its Rickshaw sleeve when it's not in use.

The smaller the tablet, warmer they can get so using them with the back open is ideal.

It's not crazy at all.
Let's do some math, a full set of case, cover, screen protector with some good quality will cost you ~150 bucks.
A set of Apple cover/case is 98, and a invisible shield glass protector is easily 50

Apple care plus is 99, and one replacement (I remember) is 50.

So it's the same cost as putting Apple care in it, and once it is somehow damaged, you just bring it to the Apple Store and pay 50 to get a new one.

What's the point having all those protection and waste the slim design?

I don't worry about protecting tablets as much as phones. As I'm far less likely to use a tablet one-handed, be pulling it in and out of my pocket, or using it outdoors, I think the odds of a bad drop are actually pretty slim. I also have never used screen protectors on any of my devices. My tablet is probably at most risk of damage while in my laptop bag.

So no, I don't think there's anything crazy about using an iPad without a case, especially if you don't travel with it often.

Some people are very anal about their devices though and can't afford to pay $50 every time something goes wrong with the pad

Myself included would just grind me down having to look at a chink or a mark on the screen or body, not everyone is the same

You are talking about tucking your iPad in the Rickshaw....Right?

Seriously, I use the iPad cover with no case on the back for a couple of reasons. I find the cover helps greatly when holding the iPad for one handed use. I find myself always holding the iPad with my thumb and pointer finger, palm against iPad side and other 4 fingers on top of the folded back cover. Without the cover, I find one handed use more difficult. I don't like to cover the bak as it takes away from the design. I'm careful with the iPad, so has been. O problem whatsoever with scratches, etc...by not having a back cover.

No AppleCare on the iPad either! But then again, I don't use an iPad like I do a phone. I don't carry the iPad with me everywhere I go....so much less chance of dropping it on the street and getting damaged.

I used all my iPads without a case, just like they where designed. When I'm not using it my mini I just put it in a leather sleeve from Joli. Never had the urge to use a screen protector and never had a scratch on the screen either. :)

I'm using mine naked until my smart cover and silicone case arrive from Apple. I like how thin and light it is without a case BUT, a) I'm constantly worried about scratching the back every time I put it down and b) the way I hold it I actually find the slightly sharp edge uncomfortable on my finger so looking forward to getting my case.

The back of the iPad is enough scratch resistant. I never used a back cover. Only Smart Cover and if I had to take it out of home a cheap sleeve from Amazon or eBay is your friend....don't forget to choose a sleeve that can fit both the iPad and the Smart Cover :p

i used the smart cover and a skin on my original mini. i plan to do the same for my 4. although rather than a hot pink carbon skin it's probably going to be just a clear one.

although after reading about the heat above... i'm 2nd guessing the skin but i'll still use a smart cover... that way the screen is protected if i slide it between the seat & console in the car or arm & cushion in the couch!

Never used a case, iPad or iPhone, never had a problem. Just a sleeve for when I travel. I'm no desk jockey either.

Mini2, naked

The choice is less about the device and more about you. Some people drop things, some people don't. Some people travel with their pads, some don't.

I never drop, but always spill things. So my mini has 'spilled' a few times from the sofa into the carpet. But It's never slipped from my grip to the ground. The same cannot be said of other people to whom I have handed the mini, directly onto gravel.

I used my iPad 2 without cover and screen protector, and the screen is still fine, even after those years. I also use y iPad Air 2 without a screen protector, though I did get a transparent back cover for it that has a good grip. The front/glass are uncovered, however. No scratches at all.

My reasoning is that the screen is beautiful and all protectors I have seen or tried (even on smaller devices) take away from that beauty. At the end of the day, it's also a tool, not a collectible. It doesn't need to stay in pristine conditions (I have stringed instruments that are far more valuable than my iPads, and I don't cover them with a protective film either!) But really, I think you have to be deliberately careless or unfortunate to scratch the screen of an iPad.

I never got why someone would put case on their iPad. iPad isn't something you take in and out of your pocket all the time. You don't just drop your iPad. Smart Cover is enough for iPad. iPad cases = yuck.

Personally I hate the Smart Cover, strange idea that you want to use it as a "book" it's always in the way when you want to use the iPad. The only thing it's useful for is as stand, but there are other and better solutions for that. :)
