Tenfourfox on Leopard runs way faster than on Tiger on all my PPC machines. That includes my Quad G5 and both G4 Powerbooks. And by runs better/faster I mean any interaction with the app including scrolling, new tab creation, and page reloads.

Is this an expected behaviour? Are the graphics drivers so much better on Leopard than they are on Tiger?

Thanks

I can't say.

I run Tiger only on systems that won't run it. Considering that T4Fx is named after Tiger though because Cameron Kaiser prefers Tiger, he'd probably be interested in your observations.

I'm thinking I may have the wrong version of tiger installed. I did a fresh install from retail tiger dvd onto my G5 and simply imaged my other PPC machines from that original install.

I'll try to track down the grey restore DVDs and give that a shot.

Theoretically, once the 10.4.11 update has been applied, the baseline version on the install disc becomes totally irrelevant. Have you tried reapplying 10.4.11 (combo), repairing permissions etc.?

Wonder if Classila will be updated ? Its been almost 5 years now. Kaiser stated to me in a private message that he has no plans to abandon it, but stated he will try to get to work on an update.

He has mentioned a couple times that it is now abandoned. Pretty sure I saw that somewhere on this forum actually. Leopard webkit is also abandoned.

I have thought I noticed this as well, but I thought it was just my mind playing tricks on me because I like Leopard better.

I notice it much more on my G5, it’s not as much of a difference on G4s. Something tells me it has to do with memory management. Leopard allows more 64bit support for G5s than Tiger does. I might be totally wrong here, but perhaps that’s why it seems faster on Leopard (especially on G5s).

When was this private message sent, though?
Don't hold your breath, Dr Kaiser is a demon PPC coder by night but is the infectious disease MD for Riverside County in Califorina by day, I would imagine he is flipping off his head busy with the Pandemic. Be realistic: Classilla is old old code, and old code is incredibly hard to maintain. Modern toolchains and the like simply don't exist for OS 9. The same thing is happening with PowerPC OS X, and will eventually happen with Intel OS X as well, although we'll likely have a decade or more of Intel OS X browser support, as long as there is someone with Dr Kaiser's programming chops willing to put in the time.

This is exactly why I questioned this. I don't expect any updates for Classilla soon, especially nothing that will bring it up to par with even TenFourFox. OS 9 is 21 years old.

I think part of it is where to focus his resources when he does have the time. And for that, I believe T4Fx is probably winning out. I imagine the userbase for T4Fx is probably much larger than for Classilla.
