Terminal error erase disk

Anyone have any idea what this means and how to fix ?

This is on a WD Elements 1TB.. DU fails too...

however, i have read elsewhere that they got it to work when plugging into Linux or over FW first (if available), but i can't see how..

This looks more like a drive failure

I'd say it's an inconsistent connection, so try a different cable, usb port, or even better, just use firewire. That'll make copying files to and from the drive faster as a bonus.
