try repairing your disk. What's the output when you do simple commands? Will they run at all?

You might have an error in your profile (~/.bash_profile or ~/.bashrc) that causes Terminal to stall.

Try hitting Control-C to see if you can get a command prompt (by terminating whatever is stalled).

In order of likelihood of resolving the problem:

    Restart.

    Delete ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Terminal.plist.

    Check your ~/.bash_profile and/or ~/.bashrc.

    Try other shells /bin/zsh, bin/tcsh, ...

    Try xterm
