I was asked by a friend who has just bought a new macbook if you can password protect files and directories. I explained how you can do it through terminal quite easily in some pictures (here if anyone wants to know how).

But is there another way, without needing some extra software from a 3rd party?
 
you realise that you can achieve the same thing by changing the persmissions of a folder in get info right? Also, the best bet into having safe password protected files is to make a password encrypted disk image in disk utility.
 
Here's a way to put strong encryption on a file from Terminal. There's a link there to a widget that someone based on the command line too.
