"Cars, though... It just seems very odd, unless they bought an established car brand and used that. Jaguar or something prestigious."

Jags are still considered a bit "naff" in the UK.

Apple has a great brand name.......why dirty it with an ICE car manufacturer?

Who would want an Apple branded car? The entire thing would have to be replaced after a couple of years when a new version of the OS renders it obsolete and the batteries no longer hold a charge.

At least it would be razor-thin, though. Ideal for parking in tight spaces.

Well that's just it. If Apple release a car, they need to start being reasonable with products and warranties. Cars demand huge warranties and Apple would have to create a whole infrastructure for car repairs and servicing. I have no doubt that Apple is working on a car, I just think it'll mean a huge change in the operation and values of the company. At the minute, they rip people off with huge profit margins on devices they only have to support for about a year and are very cheap if they need to hand out replacements or servicing. Cars are a totally different can of worms and they can't be like that anymore.

Nice! Do you know wether they will place the power inlet on the bottom of the car or not?

Where else would they place it? Was that a rhetorical question or?
I'm gonna let you in on a little secret. I'm beta testing the car right now. Take a look at the power inlet:

It's that thing that looks like a half clock in middle of front wheels. The thing is simply amazing. And quite simple to use. All you have to do is turn your car upside down, or sideways (technical term we use at apple is iTurn), and then use a proprietary key to open the inlet. Now u have to have a proprietary cable as well (of course!), but you can buy those for just 5999$ since they will not ship with the car.

Or you can purchase a adapter for just 499$.

This thing will rock your world when it comes out.

I guess the iCar Pro could work. Needs a kb and stylus though. Itunes will need updated..

Musk lives in tech world. The car on the other had should be considered utility and as such there really is no barrier to entry or time limit. I think musk is really very visionary but he's dead wrong that time is a factor on this one.

Let's just hold off until WWDC, see what the news is :) Stay optimistic!
Would totally rock to see an Apple Car rolled out at the WWDC keynote this year. That would drop a lot of bricks.

Elon looks like has got a bad case of the flu here. Or hungover. Or both.
The guy is working himself to the bone. Most mortals would have kept their wife, take a mistress and hire a few dozen for an inner circle. Howard Hughes, Henry Ford and company did that once the first billion was made.

Apple may do well or fail. Same with Tesla. But something is going to happen in this area of technical advancement here soon and it does appear the traditional car companies are acting like Balmer did when he first saw the iPhone.

It's an exciting time to be alive.

The difference between Musk and Tim Cook is that Cook will aim to double-pencils-down, that's why it takes Apple longer.

Something tells me the Apple Car will be something like the current Apple TV. Not the entire machine itself, but serves more like the brains of the hardware. You plug the module into a "dumb car" and get to reap the benefits of the Apple ecosystem.

Don't forget, the car would be held with adhesive in some places making replacing parts nigh impossible. Where screws are used the screws are designed to allow Apple to detect customer modifications. If you dare to change the installed CarPlay that will void your warranty.

As for service, if you thought German cars where expensive to service, wait until you deal with Apple's service. You want to use an aftermarket part? Nope, your car will fail to start.

Why are they making a car? Just why?
I get they ship Lithium batteries in their computers but do they really have the urge to shove them into a car?

I mean look CarPlay has to be literally one of the worst things ever, and why would they shift focus on such a huge project when their fundamentals such as the phones and computers are so extremely lacklustre currently? There's a reason why there is so much heat in the forums recently because both the software and hardware aren't living up to the legacy, I mean everything they've been releasing recently feels unfinished.

Another thing to point out is that they dropped the concept of creating their own TV set in favour of providing the software for all other TVs (Apple TV), and I believe they should do the same with this car thing and stick to providing great software for cars out there.

I'm sure they'll make something great, but I'm sure it'll be the next Apple Watch and not the next iPhone...
They really need to shift their priorities.

diversification... Self driving cars will be massive and it is a technology issue. Cars are a little like phones these days: different manufacturers buy parts from suppliers and then assemble. The skill is in the differentiator and technology is increasingly becoming that differentiator in the car market. In other words, the market is moving directly into Apple's core strengths.

Will Apple car drive itself following Apple Maps? That would make waterproofness an essential feature to make it work after you take it off the river you've been driven into.
Last week I was searching for a city near me that I know is about 30 miles away. Apple Maps directed me to Africa. How in the hell am I supposed to get to Africa? Underwater tubes? Is this the garbage that is going to power the brains of an Apple Car?

Elan, aren't you the guy who is building a 5 bazillion dollar battery plant and promising a 35 kilo-buck electric car just as the supplies of lithium hydroxide are dwindling?

Good luck with all of that.

Just like my Macbook 2008 ruining on the latest OSX!

And yes, you or me don't need an Apple car, therefore nobody would want one. I get it.
