iOS Test apps on own device without App store?

Is it possible to install and use iOS apps that I write in Xcode on my own iPhone without have them published to the App store? Does this require the $99 developer fee? Can I transfer the app directly from my Mac to my iPhone?

Yes, you can put your app on your iDevice and no, you don't have to be a registered developer. 🙂
