Alongside the iPhone 16 models, Apple launched its next-generation flagship AirPods, the AirPods 4. There's a new design and for the first time, Active Noise Cancellation, so we thought we'd check them out to see how they compare to the prior-generation AirPods 3 and the AirPods Pro 2.

There are two versions of the AirPods this time around, an entry-level $129 model, and a $179 model that also includes Active Noise Cancellation. ANC has previously been exclusive to the AirPods Pro and the AirPods Max, and this is the first time that Apple's used it in an open-ear headphone design and in a device at the sub-$200 price point.

Apple tweaked the design of the AirPods, introducing a shape that's supposed to fit more ears. The revamp took into account millions of scans of different ears to get a more comfortable, snug fit for people. In practice, the design isn't that much different, but if you have had trouble keeping AirPods secured in your ears, you might have luck with the new shape.

ANC typically comes in headphones or earbuds that have some kind of seal with the ear canal, but that's not the case here. Apple did not add silicone tips like it has for the AirPods Pro 2, so the ANC isn't going to cut out sound quite as well as earbuds where you get a seal. That said, the ANC is pretty decent at cutting down on annoying ambient noise like ACs, the drone of an airplane engine, and similar sounds.

Apple upgraded both models with the same H2 chip that's used in the AirPods Pro 2, and it's an upgrade over the H1 that was in the AirPods 3. Sound quality is about on par with the AirPods Pro 2 as a result, and the feature set is the same in terms of support for spatial audio, Voice Isolation, Personalized Volume, Transparency in the ANC version, and other functions. If you're coming from AirPods 3 and upgrading to AirPods 4, you'll definitely notice the boost in sound quality.

Apple slimmed down the AirPods case, and it's tiny. Cutting case size sacrificed MagSafe charging though, so while the $179 model supports Qi-based wireless charging, it does not have a magnet inside. The more affordable model doesn't have wireless charging at all. The button at the back for pairing and setup is gone, but there's actually a hidden button at the front for these features.

Battery life has actually gone down compared to the AirPods 3. You'll get up to five hours of listening time with a single charge instead of six hours, and a little less with ANC turned on. There's still 30 hours of total listening time with the case, even though it's smaller than before.

The case for the more expensive model also has a built-in speaker for Find My, so if you misplace your AirPods, you can get the case to play a sound so you can find them. This isn't a feature of the cheaper version, but it still has general Find My connectivity so you can locate it on a map.

For the $179 price, the AirPods 4 with ANC offer a pretty robust feature set, and at $129, the version sans ANC is competitive with many other cheaper Bluetooth headphones on the market. The main benefit of AirPods with Apple devices is the automatic pairing and device switching, which you can't get with competing products.

The article claims the case “does not have a magnet inside” but this is false. It has magnets for three purposes:
1. To keep the lid closed
2. To keep each AirPods snugly in position in the case
3. On the back to attach an Apple Watch charger

I was pleasantly surprised by how good the Active Noise Cancellation is — but then again, I’m the one person whose ears every generation of AirPods has fit perfectly.

I want to cop a pair of AirPods Max because I’ll need something great to listen to Rihanna’s R9 whenever it drops, but I’ll wait for a Black Friday promo since they only updated the port from Lightning to USB-C.

I ordered a pair just for the noise cancellation, but I haven't tried them on. Every single pair of "in ear" headphones has been a miserable fit for my ears. I might just send them back before I open the package that arrived on Friday. Still deciding.

I have opened my new watch and iPhone. :)

Tried these out for the first time on my morning walk with the dog. Part of my walk is on a busy street and other parts on very quiet streets. It was nice how the volume automatically adapted. Also nice that if I stopped to talk to someone it automatically quieted.

I have a hard time wearing anything that goes inside my ear canal for any length of time, so when I was shopping for wireless buds last year, I wanted to try and find something that fit the bill. Ended up going with a set of SoundPeats Air 4 buds, and they've been a pleasant surprise. Their stock sound is not great, but the app allows for custom profiles, which I found helped tweak the sound to be a little more lively and rich.

The SoundPeats Air 4 also have ANC, in a non-ear-tip design. Is it perfect? No, but it does reduce "hiss" and "rumble" from the ambient sound fairly well. It's a nice-to-have feature, and does make the overall audio profile of the buds a bit better.

Here's the kicker: They are half the price of the new AirPods 4.

I have only about 45 mins of listening time but it is quite amazing the amount of ANC these provide considering the gaps in fitment. I've owned all AirPods and these are quite good for the money.

If you have the Pro 2's and are happy with fitment, no need to get these. Pro 2's are the best sonically.

I am one of those people that hate wearing Pro 2's when working out or working period because they get sweaty and start falling out where regular AirPods let my ears breath and they stay in, so these are a treat for that purpose.

Ironically, I'm one of the few people where the AirPods 3 fit me perfectly. The AirPods 4 are actually a bit loose and feel like they're going to fall out a lot more than the previous gen.

That said, the sound quality is night and day especially in the low frequencies, and the ANC does indeed work far better than I expected!

I had no problems with the AirPods 1/2, but the AirPods 3 never fit for me at all, so I’m curious how AirPods 4 might fit. AirPods Pro 1 did not fit, but AirPods Pro 2 fit with the XS tips only.

I was definitely surprised by the ANC on these. I have Jabra Evovle2 85's and the AP4's ANC was solid in comparison. They also create a decent seal in my ear canal, much more than the AP2's im upgrading from.

Also, while they may not be officially 'magsafe' compatible, my MagSafe charger still appears to charge the AP4's.

Generally I find the non-Pro Airpods more comfortable to wear than in-ear buds, and they fit my ears well. I'd like to know how effective the 4's ANC is on airplanes though, which is where I find ANC most necessary.

I got my set this morning. I’ve been using the AP3s and the Pro 2s, but the Pros irritate my ear canals so they only really get used when the AP3s need charging. Now I have the AP4s as well, the Pros will likely be going in a drawer and I’ll use the AP3s as my fallback when the AP4s need charging… which it seems may be fairly often, even with ANC off, the AP4s seem to discharge much more quickly than the AP3s! They also don’t seem to charge as quickly as the AP3s either.

It’s taken me a bit of time to adjust to the sound of the AP4s. The AP3s have more treble so the additional bass of the AP4s makes music seem a bit less detailed and maybe more muffled sounding? That said, they sound pretty much like the Pros, so I’m sure I’ll get used to them.

As a side note, the battery life of my AP3s has been incredible. I bought them at launch and there’s virtually no battery fade, in fact they seem to have better battery life than the brand new AP4s!

In terms of fit, ironically the AP4s might fit slightly less well than the AP3s. Being smaller, the right one definitely feels a bit looser than the left and if I tilt my head and shake it, the bud will fall out. I’ll need to be more careful than I needed to be with the AP3s and Pro 2s.

The ANC is pretty decent, if I crank the volume they can definitely drown out normal surrounding noise, I’d say they’re like 75% of what the Pro 2s do. This is likely a firmware thing, but Conversation Awareness seems more responsive compared to the Pro 2s, but it also much more aggressively reduces the volume to the point I can barely hear the music, which kind of defeats the purpose, it might as well just pause the music if I can’t hear it.

I think my only other criticism would be the lack of volume sliders on the stems. I’m not sure why that is a Pro-only feature, but I guess as these have pretty much everything else the Pros do, Apple had to hold something back (or keep it in reserve for the AP5s! 😂)

I was skeptical, but I can't believe how well the AP4 w/noise cancellation fit in my ears. They were delivered yesterday and I wore them for about about 2 hours and there was no ear fatigue at all and are a very secure fit. The ANC works really well for my purposes and I'm happy with the overall product. I sometimes forget that I've been wearing them for the past 3 hours... very comfortable to me.

The AP1-3 were a terrible fit for me and never sat in my ears correctly, and the APP1 and APP2 led to ear pain after an hour or so and eventually I developed an allergic reaction to the silicon tips.

If I can dare to ask....

Has anyone used new ANC AP4 with an Android phone?

I know you don't get the full integration, but wonder if you can control AnC and transparency, and what controls work. How is ANC on them with Android, work just as well?

It's just I like the fit of AP than shove in type and seen these.

I've done 8 miles of walking along busy roads now with the AirPods 4 w/ ANC

They are incredible -- totally game changing and a must for hearing health

It's like they just "turn the volume knob down" on all the traffic noise, which allows me to have my podcasts or music playing at lower levels

Absolutely LOVE them!

Also, I'm someone who continues to love the AirPods 2 and really disliked the bulbous full ear feel of the Airpods 3

The Airpods 4 are much closer to the feel of the 2's than the 3's (thank goodness)

Still, nothing matches the "can't even tell they are in" feel of the Airpods 1/2 -- for me, that is. Those will remain my gym earbuds, as I don't need ANC there at all .. but for my walks (which are daily and long), the AP4's are the new go-to

My one knock on the AP4 .. battery life is just "ok" .. and this is when they are new 😬
