Also, while they may not be officially 'magsafe' compatible, my MagSafe charger still appears to charge the AP4's.

The MagSafe charger at its core is just a Qi wireless charger with magnets in it. The new AirPods case is not a MagSafe case but it’s still Qi compatible so of course the MagSafe charger will still work, just won’t hold it in place while charging. If you have an Apple Watch that charger will also work and connect to the case magnetically.

Given the whole point of this product is the ANC, this review is rather perfunctory. Basically one line:

the ANC isn't going to cut out sound quite as well as earbuds where you get a seal. That said, the ANC is pretty decent at cutting down on annoying ambient noise like ACs, the drone of an airplane engine, and similar sounds.

I can’t watch the video right now, does it go into more detail? If so, can someone summarise it for me? How good is the ANC, compared to the Pros?

I'm becoming more impressed with the AirPods 4 w/o ANC. These stay in my ears much better than the 2nd Gen AirPods. I like the sound more and I enabled Spatial Audio and that's pretty slick when I move my head from left to right.

As an AirPod Pro 1 user, I am skeptical to move to AirPod 4. How does sound quality and ANC compare from AirPod Pro 1 to AirPod 4?

I tried them and they just aren't as good as reviews are saying they are in terms of ANC. As expected, it just can't be done very well without the tips. If you can't deal with tips, this is better than the 3s or regular 4s but if you can wear tips, the ANC on the Pro stomps this and at virtually the same price considering current sales.

ANC with earbuds of any kind is a joke. I have the AirPods Pro, and at most they can mitigate about 5-10 DB from a noisy environment. And yes, I went through the entire optimization process. Then I bought a pair of Sony over the ear headphones (wh-1000xm4). That's when I discovered how ANC is effectively implemented. My wife and I each have a pair now, and as one example, they obliterate the noise from jet engines when onboard a flight, while allowing us to hear the flight attendants and each other. Great for action movies like Alien: Relic, where theaters are cranking up sound to unsafe levels. And yes, the cancelling is adjustable, so you can enjoy a movie without blowing out your eardrums!

I have the first gen Pro's and they're going strong. Thought these could be a nice replacement as I thought the form factor was nicer, silicone tips are always annoying. I think if you've had Pro's in the past you'll be disappointed with the ANC. However, how much cancellation it actually does achieve is great. The Pro's sound much better (as expected).

That is simply not true. While over ears obviously provide more passive isolation, there are earbuds like the Bose Quiet Comfort Ultra earbuds that provide phenomenal ANC/isolation.

Sound quality is a big step up with the 4’s over the original Pros. The ANC is better with the 4’s as they have the H2 chip, but the actual isolation with the first gen Pros will be better as they are sealed earbuds.

I didn’t realize the 4s had trasnparecy mode as well. So they are essentially the same as the Pro 2s in that respect.
Yeah and transparency may work even better than the Pro 2s cause the outside noise isn't blocked all that much to begin with.

First ANC headphones I've owned. Got mine yesterday (I'm in NZ) and as I was walking from post box back to the house I popped them in my ears to check the fit before I'd even paired them.
What a spookily weird experience that was. I was suddenly in silence like being out in the snow. They weren't playing anything, I hadn't paired them.

I have young kids, the youngest is 2 and he was having a tantrum next to me as I was working in the kitchen while listening to classical music. ANC allowed me to enjoy the music without completely shutting off his screams. Heaven.

It’s a shame they don’t have a MagSafe case. It put me off buying them.

Unless you really hate rubber seals, you have no reason not to spend $10 more for a pair of AirPods Pro 2 on sale, $189 at lots of stores. Just for the extra couple hours of battery life swipe volume control, and MagSafe charging alone.

Alongside the iPhone 16 models, Apple launched its next-generation flagship AirPods, the AirPods 4. There's a new design and for the first time, Active Noise Cancellation, so we thought we'd check them out to see how they compare to the prior-generation AirPods 3 and the AirPods Pro 2.

There are two versions of the AirPods this time around, an entry-level $129 model, and a $179 model that also includes Active Noise Cancellation. ANC has previously been exclusive to the AirPods Pro and the AirPods Max, and this is the first time that Apple's used it in an open-ear headphone design and in a device at the sub-$200 price point.

Apple tweaked the design of the AirPods, introducing a shape that's supposed to fit more ears. The revamp took into account millions of scans of different ears to get a more comfortable, snug fit for people. In practice, the design isn't that much different, but if you have had trouble keeping AirPods secured in your ears, you might have luck with the new shape.

ANC typically comes in headphones or earbuds that have some kind of seal with the ear canal, but that's not the case here. Apple did not add silicone tips like it has for the AirPods Pro 2, so the ANC isn't going to cut out sound quite as well as earbuds where you get a seal. That said, the ANC is pretty decent at cutting down on annoying ambient noise like ACs, the drone of an airplane engine, and similar sounds.

Apple upgraded both models with the same H2 chip that's used in the AirPods Pro 2, and it's an upgrade over the H1 that was in the AirPods 3. Sound quality is about on par with the AirPods Pro 2 as a result, and the feature set is the same in terms of support for spatial audio, Voice Isolation, Personalized Volume, Transparency in the ANC version, and other functions. If you're coming from AirPods 3 and upgrading to AirPods 4, you'll definitely notice the boost in sound quality.

Apple slimmed down the AirPods case, and it's tiny. Cutting case size sacrificed MagSafe charging though, so while the $179 model supports Qi-based wireless charging, it does not have a magnet inside. The more affordable model doesn't have wireless charging at all. The button at the back for pairing and setup is gone, but there's actually a hidden button at the front for these features.

Battery life has actually gone down compared to the AirPods 3. You'll get up to five hours of listening time with a single charge instead of six hours, and a little less with ANC turned on. There's still 30 hours of total listening time with the case, even though it's smaller than before.

The case for the more expensive model also has a built-in speaker for Find My, so if you misplace your AirPods, you can get the case to play a sound so you can find them. This isn't a feature of the cheaper version, but it still has general Find My connectivity so you can locate it on a map.

For the $179 price, the AirPods 4 with ANC offer a pretty robust feature set, and at $129, the version sans ANC is competitive with many other cheaper Bluetooth headphones on the market. The main benefit of AirPods with Apple devices is the automatic pairing and device switching, which you can't get with competing products.

I just wore mine at an Airshow. Very impressive ANC performance.

Looks like these are worth a go, especially as the AP3 and APP2 are just a little bit too big for my ears, it seems these might be perfect based on some comments. I think I can live with the reduced noise cancellation in return for more comfort. However, the lack of volume control is a bummer. When I'm wearing my AP3 instead of the APP2s I keep reaching for them to adjust the volume and then it's, oh 💩! It seems really stupid not to have this on every model as standard. As I walk around the city today, I'm going to try my APP2s without the ear tips on and see what that's like. I've never tried that before.

I never liked the feeling of the Airpods Pro in my ear, especially the pressure from noise cancelation. These 4’s do a decent job of noise cancelation and they feel great in my ears. I definitely think they’re the best if you don’t like how the pros feel.

Absolutely valid idea. I’m glad Apple still caters to people like me who consider the seals (silicon or foam) a nonstarter though. I was prepared to just keep buying the standard model every 3 years or so (I was on the 2’s until a few months back where I lost one pod at a barn and didn’t realize until I got home).

This is the first time I’ve ever considered a generation-to-generation upgrade if any Apple product I’ve ever owned, and it’s getting to be nearly 20 years now…
