Chromebook? Chromebooks are terrible for productivity and severely underpowered. Those are true definitions of email machines. Windows laptop I can agree with though.

Works great for schoolwork and similar activities. Does very good.
I use mine for so much more than email. With an i5 I would not call it "weak".

I think you’d have a different opinion if you had one in hand and actually tried to have an objective view of it. I’ve been using nearly every iteration of tablet/keyboard design from Apple, Microsoft and Google for 10 years now since the introduction of the original iPad. This is BY FAR the most well-rounded, fully thought out execution from any manufacturer so far. Microsoft tried really hard with the Surface kickstand which has its positives, but the combined keyboard/tablet device in laptop mode is really clumsy. The Magic Keyboard design is as stable as any laptop, and you can solidly write on the screen. Try that with your “Macbook with Pencil support” so many people say they want.

Normal conditions I would try one out in the Apple Store.
However ....

Most Chromebooks don't have i5s (or even i3) since majority are Pentium and Celeron so that makes sense. Curious as to which Chromebook you have?

I was waiting for it since years and I Purchased the magic keyboard on day one. It is indeed heavy and expensive. It does lack the function keys. However you can remap the esc key if you really need to. I really don’t but it could be my workflow. Having said this, the keyboard is amazing. I can finally kiss the laptop goodbye and I’m extremely happy about it. The way they made the angle is genius because it actually enables you to use touch the screen without the typical awkwardness of using it on a standard laptop. I just wish it was possI le to angle it a tad more. I can see how this keyboard is not for everyone but is still amazing

I love it, but I’m gonna wait for the one with better materials. It feels like the perfect setup though, exactly how I envision future of personal computers. I would want two, one for the home and one for the office, so the price would need to come down too. We’ll see what gen 2 is like.

How do you lock the screen if it doesn't have hot keys?
Hit that power button on the side of the iPad, homie
I think it's a very expensive paperweight.

My reply was somewhat in jest, but OK, even if it had hot keys/function and esc keys, does iPadOS even have the capability of locking the screen from the keyboard? The hotkey necessary for this would be news to me, and an interesting deal breaker. But everyone has special uses and varying opinions. This case is quite divisive.

Samsung.
I currently have a 3 but have a Galaxy 4K on order at Best Buy.
The new one has an i5 and 8GB ...

I did find the 3 was no longer doing what I needed as well as I wanted.

Apple digs themselves in a hole all the time. Magic mouse design (charging port on bottom) is one of the many. They are just like the japanese - 2 steps forward, 3 steps backwards (see psp, walkman, minidisc, etc).

They will eat poo if they are caught “copying” great designs on the market right now - as in touch screen laptop - which makes sense because you can choose to use it or not.

They won’t even make any of the macbooks pencil compatible. This keyboard is an optional accessory but the price is just bonkers. Unless you are one of those people like in the show succession, this keyboard is just sold to the dumb. Look at post #8 - this is exactly how apple designers think these days - it’s almost as if they don’t go outside their labs ever to see products that are sold currently.

They’re doing alright for themselves. I’d imagine they know what sells.

As for the lack of ESC key, you can remap the Globe key or the Control Key to function as ESC. I just did that on my SKF and was surprised to find how few times I actually used it. Frankly, I can’t wait until my MK arrives tomorrow!

I suspect it does. My Logitech SK Folio has a dedicated button that locks my IPP 11.

Even disregarding the price, that added weight is a deal breaker for me. I understand it has to be heavy to balance the weight of the iPad itself but I think Logitech's solution is better by adding a kickstand. It's still a compromise, but it's a compromise I prefer and rather live with.

For the 11 inch, it's 50 grams more than the Brydge. I think I can deal with 50 more grams than I'm used to...

How many hinge activations or how long before it gets droopy? Can it reach 1.5 years?

So the new MacBook Air is lighter, more capable and less expensive than the 12.9" iPad Pro + New Magic Keyboard. Brilliant.

Of course the iPad is heavier, this shouldn't surprise anyone- it has a larger screen, and this is a modular setup vs. an all in one piece. It's the same reason why the idea of a phone with 99 swappable parts isn't going to leave you with devices as thin or light as we're accustomed to.

And "less capable" is relative, considering the many capabilities and hardware in the iPad that are weaker (screen, processor) or completely missing (cameras, touch, pencil) in the Air.

NO SALE. IPAD PRO Keyboard is working just fine still. And it was cheaper. My new MacBook Pro has a real keyboard. When is Apple going to make something worth buying again?

You should appreciate this keyboard, it's reportedly just like the one on the MacBook Pro- if you're referring to the keys. Most of the reviews consider this keyboard expensive, but definitely worth buying.

Why not just lift the iPad off its mount? It's magnetic and very easy/quick.

Less convenient than flipping it over attched since you have to manage two separate pieces or forced to bring a manpurse when on the go.

11" iPad Pro, base everything WiFi only w/ Keyboard - $1,098.00 weight: 2.36 lbs.

12.9" iPad Pro, base everything WiFi only w/ Keyboard - $1,348.00 weight: 2.98 lbs.

13.3" MacBook Air, base specs, already has keyboard $999.00 weight: 2.8 lbs.

13.3" MacBook Pro, base specs, already has keyboard - $1,299.00 weight: 3.02 lbs.

So the Air is cheaper but weighs more than the 11" Pro with keyboard but also has a bigger screen.

The MacBook Pro weight is almost the same (less than 1 ounce more) as the 12.9" Pro with keyboard, has a bigger screen, and costs less.

Catalina and undoubtedly the next release of macOS will bring more native iOS apps to the Mac. But you still can't run macOS on an iPad Pro. And that's still a glaring difference.

you can buy a windows laptop for the same price as this keyboard its a joke apple has become, $700 for dam wheels its become an embarrassment

You're talking about ~$300 Chromebooks. They come in different price classes like the $849 Pixelbook Go i5/8GB/128GB vs $999 iPad Pro 12.9 6GB/128GB + $349 Smart Keyboard = $1348. There are even more affordable i5 Chromebook options like the $650 Lenovo Yoga Chromebook.

I had no idea you had to buy Mac Pro wheels to go with your iPad Pro Magic Keyboard. That *is* a bit unreasonable! Bring back Woz...
