How dark are you really thinking of though? It's night time here, I just turned off my office lights and can still clearly see the lettering on my Apple keyboard just from the ambient light from my monitor... even in dark mode, before anyone asks.
MOST of the time it works though. Enough to not need a touch-id keyboard.
Touch ID 🤦♂️ Give us Face ID for the macs already 😡
So it’s a “either or” situation rather than “supplementary” situation? I mean, you can only choose either Apple Watch or Touch ID but not both, with one acting as a backup?
Typical Diode Apple, polarised for no end.
Sure but that in no way removes the need for Touch ID on an external keyboard. I use my M1 MacBook Air mostly in clamshell mode with a third-party display. There is no way to get Face ID in that situation. Touch ID on the external keyboard just simplified my life a lot.Touch ID 🤦♂️ Give us Face ID for the macs already 😡
No reason why we can’t Have both. 🤦♂️Bet that works really well in clamshell mode.![]()
Touch ID is handy when you have 2 different users that require access the same computer. If you have an apple watch Touch-ID is useless and actually makes the experience suck requiring an extra step.
Small home? No office or other separate work area from a sleeping area? Again, if you are using a portable then the backlight is useful in just such a situation but these aren't portable keyboards.
So far we have cranky developers and people with very small homes. Not sure that constitutes more than a small niche. On the other hand the Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad (rolls off the tongue) cost me almost $200 so I'll go with: for that price, it probably should have keys backlit.
Indeed. I love how convenient unlocking with the watch is.If you have an apple watch Touch-ID is useless and actually makes the experience suck requiring an extra step.
That's a ridiculous argument. It's like saying "what's the point in a keyboard when it's docked in clamshell mode?". The majority of users would benefit from Face ID.I don't think the Touch ID works on the iPad.
I disagree. I can't stand having my Apple Watch unlocking my Mac. It unlocks continuously throughout the day whenever I walk near the desk in my home office. Very annoying since the watch always notifies me. I turned that feature off almost immediately. The Touch ID works much better and unlocks only when I press the power button.
How would Face ID help when I have my MacBook Air docked in clamshell mode? I have a crappy 1080p webcam attached to my external display. No way that would work with Face ID.
They really were, yeah. They became conspiracy nuts later. They sound fun.
Apple Watch unlock times out, and easier to touch keyboard. Not useless to me. On my M1 IMac system doesn’t ask for Watch unlock except if system is asleep for less time than the Watch timeout. If you have an apple watch Touch-ID is useless and actually makes the experience suck requiring an extra step.
I do. I also have an account for each person in the household, rather than us all just using the same account. And we don't operate normally in the administrative account: we've all got non-admin accounts and must occasionally enter admin credentials.Do people really lock their personal macs with passwords?
I have my home computers never require a password to unlock. Laptop after like 8 hours.
Yes! And besides that, some people don't wear watches at home. Not necessarily. The Apple Watch can log you in automatically but there are many other times where the Mac will still ask for your password/Touch ID to activate auto-fill keychain or access locked documents in pages/numbers that the Apple Watch doesn’t seem authorised to unlock.
I used mine in "wired" mode. It charges from a Lightning cable, so you can just run a Lightning cable from your Mac to your keyboard. I don't even know if it uses the cable for data or just charging, and I don't care, because it works fine.So I noticed there is no wired option at all. I feel like I’ve been bitten where Bluetooth wasn’t working and I needed to rely on a wired keyboard. Is that not a thing anymore? Can these be assumed to be reliable enough to be your only keyboard?
Maybe it works with 1Password and ApplePay; and maybe all the times you have to put in your password to install software, etc. If it does then it will be useful for me anyway. Then maybe I'd change to a safer password.Do people really lock their personal macs with passwords?

Agree that each fingerprint would unlock that person's account would be an amazing feature.I do. Old security habits die hard.
What I wish the Touch ID keyboard could do is INITIATE an account switch rather than just validate. If my partner has been using the iMac and I wish to switch to my account, I have to go to the account switcher menu, select a user (me), then enter the password. As I understand it, the Touch ID key will only do the last bit. I would love to be able to have it initiate the process at the beginning
But I haven't thought through how that would happen. Just idle dreaming.
EDIT:
I should clarify: our accounts each have passwords. I do NOT have them set to auto-lock after a period of time on their own. But to switch from one account to the other requires the password.
It uses it for both. You can tell because if you have to go into recovery mode the blue tooth pairing will not be there but if you plug it in it will then start working.I bought it and I'm happy with mine.

That's true. When I am prompted for my system password, a fingerprint would be nice. (I have my home computer password to a single character though.)Maybe it works with 1Password. I don't lock my home Mac, but I don't want all my passwords exposed.
