Apple suggests that the MBP can go for 7 or so hours on Wifi. I was thinking I would test this by running DVDs and seeing how long the battery lasts (it's much more convenient than using the internet for 7 hours).

Would this be an accurate way to test battery life? Do DVDs consume pretty much the same battery as Wifi use?
 
The 7 hours Apple states is under very specific conditions, which does not include use of the optical drive. Note the BATTERY LIFE FROM A CHARGE section of the following link. This should answer most, if not all, of your battery questions:
