What’s colour management like on the AVP? I’ve not seen any references to its colour gamut or how you might calibrate it…

Apple needs to focus on making a cheaper version that mainly does this. I would buy it! Should be lightweight and able to run off of being plugged into an iPhone.

...or just any device like- say- directly connected to a Mac (which, for the very purpose offered here, doesn't need an iDevice as a "middleman"). Bigger batteries in Mac would likely add more time to the approx. 2.5 hour limit of the current battery too.

Pretty solid review, but not enough being said how the existing and new displays all support high frame rates. Previously the native 2k and 5k ran at 30 and were basically unusable.

The Vision Pro is telling the Mac where you're looking every frame, and it's only rendering that portion of the screen in high resolution (foveated rendering). The fact it can do this between two devices wirelessly with no perceived lag is an incredible feat of engineering that deserves more praise.

It should also be noted that the audio is incredibly low latency. In fact, you can use AirPods Pro 2 USB-C with nearly zero lag in this configuration. Made a song last night in logic with that setup and, though barely perceptible, the latency is good enough to write music (esp. considering 32-sample buffers are the norm these days).

This looks really good in the video. 👀

I don't know how well it'd actually hold up for me after hours of writing, editing, etc., but it sure look amazing.

If I may ask, how practical is this? Can someone work (coding, writing documents, ...) like this on their Mac/MacBook for 8 hours a day (I don't know if AVP charging allows that).
For me, the Annapro head strap makes this possible, because it moves the weight to your forehead instead of your face. Also, if you want, you can remove the light seal. No pressure on your face, no sweat because there’s no contact, less weight.

Don't forget the TV too... for all those who spin "I'd rather buy a <huge> TV". Yes, buy that TV if they don't already own it but you'll never be able to bring it on the plane... to the hotel... on the train... etc.

I don't see Vpro as either-or. I see it as BOTH if one can afford both... like people see iPhone vs. iPad or even MB vs. desktop Mac or Computer monitor and a TV. If one can't afford both, buy the TV and traditional monitor, etc and then make do with up to 16" screen sizes when on the go. But if you can afford both, you can have your big screens at home and office AND NOW on the road too.

That's a BIG deal. The alternative technologies trying to deliver the same are foldable screens, rollable screens and projection screens. Folds & Rolls would be cumbersome and increasingly heavy at this size. Projectors need relatively low light and something on which to project that would be as big as this virtual screen. In all 3 options, there's also no privacy unlike Vpro where you could work on the most sensitive of information and be the only person able to see it... even in a crowded spot like Coach on a plane or while waiting in a terminal, etc.
💯. I hope in the future you can have multiple devices tethered, Mac, iPad and iPhone at same time.

As I understand, thhis feature is not a replacement for multiple displays since one can't actually see these displays simultaneously. It's just another incarnation of virtual displays available in every desktop OS. On desktop, you flip the displays with shortcuts, with AVP you need to rotate your head. It's not like they increased the resolution of this thing (as happens with multiple physical displays).

While I still think the top-of-screen position of the menubar on macOS is superior to menus attached to each window in Windows (and Linux), that breaks down with these ultra-wide screen layouts. It feels super counterintuitive to reach all the way to the left for a menu when the window for an app is all the way to the right.

It would be cool if the menubar "snapped above" the active window, much like the Dock transfers between different attached monitors.

IIRC currently, the screen is rendered in full and then downsampled/compressed based on where you look on the Mac.

How do you like it when traveling? Do you use keyboard on MBP or take a magic. Keyboard?
I carry with me a Magic Trackpad and a foldable keyboard I bought on Amazon, although it becomes invisible when immersed in an environment.
I guess I could take my Magic Keyboard but that would make my bag even heavier than it currently is.

Just downloaded VisionOS 2.2 and it candidly surpasses my highest expectations. I expected it to be big...but I mean it is massive the amount of screen real estate you have—and it's all one single screen. I have always hated having mutliple monitors stacked together. It's kind of clumsy and disjointed. This is one massive screen—so smooth and free to move windows around wherever.

That Apple also threw in the audio routing through AVP and the better resolution is just icing on the cake but also massive updates. I liked my AVP before but the value just went up a ton for me with this update. Great work Apple and keep the early Christmas presents coming!

Yes, seeing the keyboard is a great new feature.

One issue is the backgrounds, like this tropical beach. It might be much better if there is an option to make the scene active instead of static.

I was happy to see info that it's not just a wider display but crisper?

Does anybody have an Intel 2019 Mac Pro + AVP and if so have you checked if ultra wide works on it? There was some talk that it may require Silicon but I haven't seen that requirement listed anywhere officially with this beta. Virtual Display works on the Intel Mac Pro with current non beta versions.

That will depend on how (un)comfortable the headset is for you. Some people say they can wear it for barely an hour before needing to take it off, others can use it for hours.

Don’t people still struggle to wear the headset for more than a couple hours at once?
It seems to vary a lot from person to person. There are probably a variety of factors including head/face shape and size, and tolerances. The included fittings almost certainly don't suit everyone, and it's possible that even with 3rd party custom fittings some people just aren't ever going to be comfortable enough. But no product is for everyone 🤷‍♂️

I usually do, it’s an iPad, an iPhone and a MacBook.

They have been pretty portable for the most part, especially my iPhone. It slips into my pockets
You know they're talking about large screens, yet you're talking about small screens. Are you telling them they don't need large screens and portability at the same time?

I should try the Meta Quest 3's workstation feature with my MacBook Pro and see its effectiveness.

Although I'd imagine the Vision Pro of course would be much more seamless since it's within the Apple ecosystem and built/integrated by Apple.

I was not expecting the update to improve resolution and add Mac audio, in addition to introducing ultra/wide. Each of these are pretty huge in themselves.

I'm wondering with this increased bandwidth, is the latency affected?

No, I'm telling them I carry small screens.

I didn’t say anything about them not needing large screens.

I once got an aircraft tho and there was an Apple fan using a 70 inche screen to Davinci Resolve on the go. The other passengers were really angry, he took up an entire row and the plane was over weight and couldn’t take off. He was ejected by clicking eject disk. Although I think it said eject something else 😆

That's really great to hear the latency is imperceptible (or nearly) since it's necessary for my work, but are you talking about before or after this ultra/wide update? I'm wondering if the increased bandwidth usage (bigger higher resolution screens plus audio) has made any change regarding that.
