Thanks. I can do that. They won't run out of 13s to push me to a 14 anway? :p

A little more battery life would be certainly be nice.

Thanks. For me a phone is more of a tool than a status symbol so I definitely don't need the latest and greatest.

Nice try, Apple :p
Just kidding. But that is exactly why Apple has handicapped the 'regular' models and added a Pro line; that is consumerism at its finest and not a sentiment brought on by rationality. Because the 13 isn't what you could expect of a €700 phone you look at the €1050 13 Pro and because you're now spending more anyway but still don't get the complete package you're looking at the €1250 14 Pro.
I do understand your point and I can't say I'm not vulnerable to it but to me it seems like that logic could better be used to steer to a second hand 13 / 13 Pro instead of a new 14 Pro.

Yes, I've read that too. I think the rumor is that the 14 will get a 60 Hz display and the 14 Pro an adaptive display that does 1 Hz for always on and 120 Hz for browsing. I've had always on displays for 10 years already so it would absolutely suck to have to go without, but I personally can't really justify the €200 difference to a 13 Pro for just that one simple function. If my current phone wasn't failing me already I'd definitely have waited another 1-2 years until the iPhones are up to standards but unfortunately I doubt my phone will last until the end of the year.

Thanks. I can imagine that's true. But since I would be new to iPhone (well, I did have the 3G so technically I'm returning to the Apple camp :p ) I was thinking/hoping I was missing something. But you're probably right: I have to look at it as expendable money in order to hold the newest phone instead of expecting to get something that would make up the price difference.

Thanks all!
I'll try to hold out until the launch to see whether the rumors are wrong and the regular 14 also gets a 120 Hz and always on display and if it doesn't I'll go for the 13 or 13 Pro.

Getting a 14 now will have a better trade in value for next year, which will probably offset the extra $200, vs if you get a 13 now. I say this cause the 15 might be a mass improvement or design overhaul.

I’m my opinion, I don’t see why it makes sense to buy a new iPhone that’s already 1 generation old. You’re already spending a lot of money, just to be 1 generation behind from day 1.

Because it still will be supported for 2-3+ years (which is my rotation time for my phones due to battery, etc.) and I do not need or care about the higher end features.

Phones for me reached "plenty good enough" with the 7, the only reason I'm upgrading at all really is battery life. Also in my case, there is not going to be a 14 mini if the rumours are to be believed, and I don't want a large phone.

That's why I have a laptop and a tablet.

I truly wish the iPhone 14 was getting USB-C now...
Im still using my iPhone X which is in need of a upgrade but i feel like getting this years iPhone with the Lightning port and knowing that by next year everything will switch over to USB-C i just feel like i cant justify the purchase this year knowing the info :/

I wouldn't sweat the lightning port. It has magsafe charging, when was the last time you used the port for anything other than charge?

If you're like most people - never.

Every year I ask this same question and then look at my XS and say well I guess maybe 1 more year.. I would like a better camera someday but otherwise its not a big deal to me, it doesn't feel that much slower than the 13 to me and my battery health is still 84% after 640 cycles. I paid 1200$ for it and I am getting my moneys worth.. The 14 will not be earth shattering and I will probably enter 2023 with 2018's flagship.

My view is that after about 3 generations of a new product category, there will only ever be incremental updates. The upside is that it really no longer matters when you buy in. I buy a car and drive it until it doesn't anymore and then buy a new one-- when I do it feels like a revolution in technology, but year to year they don't change much. I'm at the same point with computers, phones and watches-- buy one, use it until I can't, then get another one and wonder at the the new technology I now have.

For reasons I can't fully explain, I seem to be updating iPads more frequently than anything else but if you asked me that's the product line I'd swear is most mature... Maybe it's because it's more equal parts toy and tool, so more gratifying to update. But I digress...

I replaced my two XS Max phones with two new 13 Pro Max last week. It's an upgrade from the XS Max and from what I heard, the 14 really won't be much more of an improvement. With Apple updating the OS on phones for many years, I'll quit using these phones before they quit updating the software. I'll likely use these for years.

Biggest change between my XS Max and the Pro Max was the camera, 5G and it's a bit faster. That's about it. I expect that to be about the same with the 14.

Hmm you actually make a very good point with that!

Yeah i agree I've only ever used the lightning port on my X for charging only.

I use the lightning port to charge my phone. Since I use a magnetic phone mount in the car, I have a small metal plate in between the case and my phone so a MagSafe charger wouldn't work. My cars built in QI charger doesn't even work with the plate in there.

So use a USB cable.

My point with the lightning vs. USB-C port is that most people only use it for charging; but all the new iPhones can charge wirelessly now.

QI charging became the standard. Magsafe is a nicer version for higher end iPhones. For most people they could almost remove the port entirely and it wouldn't be the end of the world. I only use mine for wired carplay.

I bet if Apple will show the performance gains of the normal iphone 14...they will be compared to the iphone 13 and not with the 13 pro

So, bottom line, dont buy the iphone 14 but the iphone 13 that is 99% the same phone but a lot cheaper
Apple is getting in new grounds of money grab...until now at least you would get the SoC upgrade, but now....not anymore

Looking back at 10 years or so of getting Apple laptops, phones and other stuff, for me it’s been like 50-50 in terms of 1/2 the time I get the latest thing just out, the other 1/2 the time I get something 1-off from the latest, i.e. in your case the 13 instead of upcoming 14, usually to save $$ and avoid waiting for whatever release date and join that hoopla of possible delays shipping, etc. I’ve always been pretty content with both scenarios! My point being, whether you get 13 or 14, especially given what you shared about using the phone as a tool, I think you’ll be plenty satisfied. Good luck with the decision!

With magsafe charging and wireless CarPlay, and a max phone I never use the lightening port.

Is there any hope of iphone14 Pro being lighter than Xs which I found slightly heavy.
I'll miss 12 Mini, though looking forward to Camera upgrade and decent sized screen.

The only way I will get a 14 pro is if Best Buy puts out a great promotion like they did last year. They were selling the 13 pro for $900 (base 128gb) and I just had to pay $80 bucks or so to upgrade after the generous trade in amount. I owned my phone outright, and own this one outright as well.

It's to the point now where I would not buy a brand new iPhone without USB-C. It's like buying that iPhone 4S with its giant ass 20 pin connector, and then years later having lightning cables for everything else but you still have to buy sketch 3rd party cables for this stupid ass phone with its ancient giant connector. I have an 11 Pro, and it's going to be my last Lightning device. Considering their other devices are already using USB-C, it would be absolutely shocking if the 14 doesn't have it. I really think people will start ditching their iPhones if Apple doesn't get with the times.

If we were several months out I could see the argument more but the event where they announce the 14 is only 2 weeks away. And while rumors can often be true that doesn't mean what you're stating will be announced.

I don't see what MagSafe has to do with Lightning or USB-C. I'd rather use either of those cords than wireless charging which is slower and harder on the battery. I'd only use it if there were either no cables around or for a battery pack, which would counteract the problems I mentioned.

Well prepare to be shocked because it looks like the iPhone 14 is going to be the final Lightning iPhone. It's been about a decade so one more year isn't too bad.

That's just rumors and speculation about next year's phone having USB-C. That rumor has been popping up every year since like the 11 pro max was announced

Pretty sure with the EU making it a law by 2024 i think Apple will have no choice either by next year or the latest at 2024 to convert over to USB-C.
Theres no way Apple will stick with Lightning and miss out on sales in Europe.

Though not with anywhere near the credibility as this year's rumors. We mostly heard about them sticking with Lightning until they "go portless". Sort of in the same way we heard a while ago that the notch would be going away on this year's iPhone.

I'm thinking they'll have a similar promo.
