I received both email and text, I called they told me to discontinue practice , or they will remove my unlimited status on plan , I never admitted to using my phone as a hot spot or tether to a computer , my usage was actually down this month

They don't need the base it on usage. They can base it on packet header analysis. However I'm curious about the user in the other thread who claims that he wasn't tethering. There may be some JB app that looks like router traffic?
Still, this is disappointing.

Hey I'm sorry if I got mad, I just think its reasonable to caution people.

I truly think caution is wise.

Also all of sudden there are new posts of the At&t catching people it seems?

I agree.
Caution is always good and moderation.
I use MyWi once every few months if that for a short period of time if needed.
And my usage is low anyway so I doubt they would bother but others should be careful in case AT&T starts cracking down.

They know now because of 4.3 I believe. That hotspot they put in probably shows where your data is going or coming from now.

And no offense you may have unlimited data, but it's for your PHONE! Not your computer, your laptop, or your friends computer. This is part of the reason new customers can't even get unlimited data anymore. You may think you're entitled to it because it's unlimited, but you're not.

I've never understood why when people didn't follow the rules, they got in trouble, then they get all mad.

I doubt the 4.3 theory, because I would guess that most jailbreak users are still on 4.2.1 awaiting a user friendly untethered jailbreak. I know I am.

Also, TUAW has run an article on this today:
http://www.tuaw.com/2011/03/18/atandt-aggressively-moving-against-unauthorized-tethering/

There doesn't seem to be a lot in the way of hard facts and data, but it's certainly the first time I've heard of this. I would guess that this forum is going to be a great start to get a feel for how many tethering users are getting this email. I haven't gotten one (and I'm tethering right now), but I wonder if one will come. I'm also wondering if it would help to lay low on the tethering front for a while (say until sometime mid-April) and see if they stop monitoring it as closely as they currently are (assuming that this isn't all a bunch of FUD).
