You have to use either OS 3.0 or 3.0.1.

Despite my post, does anyone know why Benm or Stealth haven't been able to hack 3.1 and above? I've never tried it, but I guess you can't Option Restore or Shift Restore and get the hacked .ipcc's?

I have tethering on my iPhone on 3.1.2 after using the enable tethering hack in Cydia and then using the benm profile. I can either tether using MyWi or turning tethering on in settings.

But your phone is JB. OP seems to want to avoid JB but use it on newest firmware.

Exactly. AFAIK, you can't do it, but I've wondered why no one's hacked it in all this time.

theres some sort of ipcc validation that prevents tethering from working if you're on AT&T or don't have a signed ipcc file. or something like that.

we hexedit commcenter to disable the validation, thus reenabling the ipcc hack

Easiest way to get native tethering on the iPhone 3G is to download the sinfuliphonerepo.com source and once installed, go into the source and install the Tethering for 3G. Install that, then reboot phone, then reset network settings and you'll have native tethering, works through bluetooth and USB. Of course you have to be JB though but that's no big deal anyway.
