jw, if it's important to you, then you have to pay for it. You'll use a lot more bandwidth than regular users that don't tether. Why should you pay the same as users who use less?
It sucks for you, but that's the reality of the situation.

Yes, but I always was paying for it- with my Nokia, with a Blackberry, it was always part of the deal. Now, thanks to Apple, I am being (asked) forced to pay twice.

I get the feeling that posters who claim WiFi is everywhere, are living at home, or are students on a campus, or live in some idyllic world.

In real life, there is no WiFi while traveling. There is no free WiFi in many parts of major cities. There is no free WiFi in most airports. And there sure as heck is no free WiFi out in the boonies where I live. The last time our power got knocked out, we used a phone to tether the laptops in the house to get work done.

I agree with this. People act like WiFi is abundant as air. In fact, it is rarely "free". It is not free at Starbucks and every airport (except for Christmas time - thanks Google). I'm not sure if it is free at McDonalds, but who the hell hangs out at McD's to do work? It's only free at some independent coffee shops that are few and far between. And when it is free (like at work or on campus), it always has strings attached like not being able to visit any site you want.
