I was just wondering what happens if you turn on internet tethering on the iPhone 4 when you have the unlimited data plan? Are you charged an extra fee for tethering? How does AT&T know?

Thanks.

I THINK AT&T was previously charging a $60 fee for those who tethered with their unlimited data. The $60 was for both unlimited data, and tethering.

So what if you dont sign up for the tethering package and you turn tethering on in settings? How does AT&T know that your using you unlimited data to tether and not just surfing on your iPhone?

actually, from what I'm hearing (though I've not yet tried it) even if you turn it on, you'll get a message saying you need to contact AT&T to enable it. I may try it now and report back for you.

Have you tried to turn it on with an unlimited? You can't, unless you jailbreak. You will receive a message telling you to call AT&T to change your data plan.

You get a pop up that says that you need to contact AT&T to activate tethering. I can't wait for MyWi and being jailbroken again :( .

you risk being charged per megabyte because AT&T can and will track data tethered that way because the phone will report back it is tethering if you are not jail broken.

AT&T is not going to allow the unlimited guys be able to tether on the iPhone. Hell AT&T NEVER has had unlimited data with tethering. Before the teired data plans on phones that allowed tether (blackberry and WinMO) they would charge you an extra $30 a month for to be able to tether plus you were cap at 5gigs a month of total data usage.
