I got PDA Net yesterday, it works great and is really easy to setup. Also free.

It creates a WEP secured network that you can join with your iPad or laptop. Not sure how many computers can join though. You can also USB tether.

I have an iPhone 4 Verizon (4.2.6)

Installed TetherMe from Cydia, and it works great! Got a 1Mb Connection on my laptop.

Something I found to be a little annoying is, TetherMe enables the native tethering abilities of the phone, but also includes a settings pane for PreferenceLoader. This is useless since it just doubles what already is enabled in the native settings.

To fix this I SSHed into my phone, navigated to "/Library/PreferenceLoader/Preferences/" and renamed the "TetherMe.plist" to "TehterMe.plist-backup". Now there is no redundancy in my settings app!

I saw that as well, but TetherMe in the settings app brings me direct to every setting I would need to play with for tethering, while I need to go through several levels to get to that same information in the regular settings app. I'm keeping it in, it certainly doesn't get in the way of anything.

Good catch but I can live with that instead of paying $20 per month for tethering:D

I contacted the developer about this, and they said in a future version there will be additional settings in their PrefPane that will not be available in native menus. So beware of what you are doing with your phone, however a new update will most likely just reinstall the .plist file.

Not sure what "tether" is or how it works in a BB.
This is an iphone forum.
If you JB your iphone basicly you can tether thru Wifi, Bluetooth and USB to any of your devices for free thru various apps without having to pay for an additional tethering plan from your carrier.
TetherMe, MyWi, PdaNet all accomplish that on a JB iphone.

Just to let everyone know TetherMe works in 4.3 GM. It's brilliant, much better than the hacks MyWi or PDANet. I just can't wait till an SBSettings toggle comes out (or the Internet Tethering toggle gets updated).

tetherme, itether and mywi - nolonger needed with IOS 4.3

I used to have iTether on my JB WiFi ipad (1st Gen) and tether it to my iphone 3GS for Internet access.

After I upgraded both my ipad and iphone to IOS 4.3, it was a pleasant surprise to find that this feature now comes with IOS 4.3, provided that your data plan allows tethering - I have a Rogers Canada 6G data plan. I no longer need iTether. This is really good because I would not have to JB my ipad to run iTether (untether JB for IOS 4.3 has not come out yet). The only reason I JB my ipad was to run iTether.

Just turn on personal hotspot on the iphone, pair your ipad with your iphone over bluetooth. That's it.http://images.macrumors.com/vb/images/icons/icon7.gif

Thanks for this info. It's confusing b/c TetherMe tells you to also get iTether for iPad. It's good to know that in IOS 4.3 a JB iPhone with TetherMe is all that is necessary to get data access for an un-JB iPad.

Wasn't true when iTether first came out, but definitely true now. My non-jailbroken iPad is tethering to my iPhone 4 with TetherMe installed. Works great on wifi or bluetooth!

LOL--still confused a little!

I have a 3GS and wi-fi only Ipad! so do I need Itether on my phone to connect to Ipad?

Will tether me work if I put it on my phone and want to connect my ipad??

Just confused between Tehterme and Itether????

Yes, your 3GS can share its data with the ipad using BT tethering by installing tetherme.

I think itether needs to be installed on both the JB iphone and JB ipad.
With Tetherme you just install it on JB iphone and you can tether using BT to stock ipad or any laptop using BT or USB tethering.
You cant use USB tethering with the ipad but with laptops you're good.

Hmmm guess it will be a test cause I have a JB iphone and Ipad 1

When using tether me the ipad connects up as bluetooth correct--is it using the iphone as a wi-fi hot spot?

And using My-WI does it use the phone the same way as tether me? I dont think it connects to the ipad as "Bluetooth" it just connects as a straight WI-FI signal.

To me WI-FI connection would be faster than the way tether me works---or Im I thinking wrong??

MyWi has 2 tabs..one for wifi hotspot..the other On Demand for BT tethering..you click one or the other..not both

On Demand BT gives great battery life in the iphone and works well for basic email, surfing etc

Hotspot WiFi drains battery faster and you can get more intensive tasks done like downloading etc

You quoted the general rule correctly...wifi is abt 2x that of BT speedwise

i am using tether me, and i can't get the mms to work?? even though i have all of the correct mms settings for att i think? (and yes i have mms enabled in "messages" settings app"

here's a screenshot:

I use MyWi creaked from Cydia ( a free version on Sinfuliphone repository on Cydia.) It works great when I use USB tether, but I couldn't get it to work with bluetooth. Also can someone explain to my the point of wireless tethering via WiFi? If I already have WiFi, My other computers can already connect to the internet via WiFi, so what is the point tethering through WiFi? I don't get it.

There is no free version of MyWi. You registered almost 5 years ago and don't know discussing 'creaked' software violates MR rules?

For some reason, given the first sentence in your post, this question doesn't surprise me.

The iPad doesn't need any JB right? There is no iPad2 JB yet so I'm wondering if I can tether my iPad2 with my JB iP4 4.3.3 using TetherMe.
