Hmmm. Anybody thinking of Texas city? In fact, if the early reports are accurate (and I would not bet a dime on any early news from the Internet being accurate), then the Lebanon stash of ammonium nitrate was considerably larger. 2750 vs 2200 tons. Sub-nuclear, no less.

There is probably less of a reply here because there is a thread in PRSI on the subject, mentions Texas City and as a newbie, you can’t yet access that forum. :(

It was one hell of blast, possibly the biggest man made explosion short of a nuke?

Ah. I thought I was just unpopular :) Actually, I think it was the third largest non-nuclear. Beirut was just barely bigger - at least from the supposed tonnage. 2750 vs 2200. I forget the largest, but it was also AN, as I remember.

Besides tragic, it’s incredible to get it on video, condensation, shockwave, because of the dstance away from recording devices. This video shows 3 perspectives:

My wonder was how many people instantly thought they had been nuked? It was obvious to an Internet watcher that the mushroom effect disappeared far too quickly to be a fission or fusion weapon, but to someone who was blown off their feet in about a half second, the thought processes probably weren't too rational. And I can't blame them.
