Just wanted to see if anyone else got a text from AT&T stating a newer version of software was available for my iPhone 4. When I plugged my phone in, the new software available states 4.2. Previously it was 4.2.1. Anyone else get this?

I'm currently JB'd on 4.1 Not sure if this is old news or what but I never got a text from them before about this.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

I got one too. I am on 4.2.1 with the redsn0w tether jb. Not at home to see if it's true or not yet.

Not sure what 4.2 holds in store but it's weird since I never get texts like this from AT&T. Apple's website has even changed to reflect 4.2.

Wow, you're already on 4.2.1 and you have a text? Interesting

Maybe because our phones are JB??

I'm confused...if the current version of the system software is 4.2.1, how can 4.2 be a "newer" version?
The only thing I can think of is that, since you are on 4.1, it assumes you want to upgrade to 4.2. Once you do that, it would probably prompt you to go to 4.2.1.
But since you are jailbroken, you probably don't want to do either!

I had to restore my phone awhile back. When I plugged my phone in, it specifically said that 4.2.1 was available. Now it's saying 4.2 is available. I'm just curious as to what happened to the ".1" for the new(er) OS. I'm guessing they obviously would've had to change something otherwise why make the change?

And yes, I have no intention on updating to 4.2(.1). At least not just yet :D

This is nothing new.

Ever since the 4.2.1 update was released iTunes refers to it as "4.2" on the page shown in Post 5.

When you actually install the update iTunes will report that your device has 4.2.1 installed.

just got one of these texts. have all versions of the iphone with att; this is the first time in a while from i can remember them informing of updates.

I got it. Not jailbroken (but was before).

Maybe AT&T just feels a little lonely, you know, with all the Verizon attention at all, and just wanted to come up with some reason to remind us they care (even if they are just a wee bit dysfunctional).

maybe it's an update for that hotspot thing that verizon iphones have
Nope.

I believe it was on Engadget I read it on, but Apple impleminted a new way for the cell signal to talk to the towers in iOS 4.2. Supposedly, it helps to load balence the signals to the towers. Something like that. I"m sure AT&T will want this working on every phone they can if it does what they say.

OH..here it is...

Maybe AT&T is expecting existing Verizon customers to switch to CDMA iPhone, find CDMA limiting, and switch to ATT?

If AT&T give the hotspot for free, then I'll upgrade. Until then (or an untethered JB) I'll keep my iPhone 4 4.1 jailbreak so I can tether when I travel.

I don't think so. It's not an over the air update like Android. Maybe they could say that only i4's with firmware XYZ can connect to the cell network, but they haven't yet.
