I don't think so. It's not an over the air update like Android. Maybe they could say that only i4's with firmware XYZ can connect to the cell network, but they haven't yet.

Thats what I'm afraid of. Not that ATT would be in a rush to piss off iPhone users now that we have a choice

On the other hand if youre still on 4.1 good chance youre jb, if youre jb then good chance youre a heavy data consumer and att would be happy to lose you.

I got it today as well but I am on 4.2.1 and have the tethered jailbreak. I'm doubt they have any way of knowing who is on what unless Apple is telling them via Itunes sync.

Even if they wanted to, it's 500MB+ on an iPhone 4 (~350MB on an iPhone 3GS).

That sort of update can't be downloaded too silently.

I don't think they can change our OS but they could make it where iPhone 3GS and 4 cannot connect to their 3G or cell network with out 4.2

That would be one way to weed out some jb phones

Intersting. It really seems like Apple is trying to get people to upgrade to stock FW by annoying us. The new latest version of iBooks also only seems to like stock 4.2.1 now and produces an error message on any other iOS versions. It seems like this could be part of a strategy to push people away from JB and get them on current iOS.

The fact that it appears to be happening primarily to jailbreakers is a coincidence. Most jailbreakers don't upgrade so they can avoid issues like a tethered JB or loosing their unlock...etc. Those that don't jailbreak aren't worried so they take the latest updates as they come. So a large number of those getting this message just so happen to be jailbroken. Strictly coincidence....nothing more.

The last time AT&T texted with a software update, there was a major bug in the baseband and they were attempting to get all users to update to resolve this issue since it was locking up channels on the tower IIRC. So this and the Engadget article explains why they are sending the text...not some evil plan to get all the jailbreakers on stock firmware.

Of course if people refuse to update, whatever this issue is will continue to cause problems. I can't speak to this update, but I know in the past when AT&T did this, there really was a bug....it wasn't some scheme.

got the text the other day. they know that people who haven't updated are probably jailbroken and tethering. Considering how a large percentage of their business is seriously considering jumping ship to their competitor I would think they would have bigger fish to fry?

Just wanted to see if anyone else got a text from AT&T stating a newer version of software was available for my iPhone 4. When I plugged my phone in, the new software available states 4.2. Previously it was 4.2.1. Anyone else get this?

I'm currently JB'd on 4.1 Not sure if this is old news or what but I never got a text from them before about this.

Are you sure it is from AT&T?

I got the text message today. I'm JB so to heck with their update. :D

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

Maybe because our phones are JB??

Could be. Mine is 4.2.1 jailbroken and I got one a few days ago...
