Text msg (Nubby question)

My Iphone dose not have anything called "text" or "sms" it just has the "Messages" app and the "mail" app

I asume mail is for Wifi/Data/cell data kind of internet mail

however is the "messages" app text messaging? and if it is not can someone explain it to me a bit? and explain how to get the standard text messaging that I could do with my previous phone.

The Mail app is for your email and the Messages app is for your text messages.
