Looks like you can now use text replacement on the mac too. But it seems like it requires Mavericks.

Text replacement in Mavericks

Doesn't require Mavericks. It's on my 10.8.4 system.
System Preferences > Language & Text pane > Text sub-pane
Cool. I guess they just moved it.
In Mavericks it's in System Preferences > Keyboard > Text sub-pane
