Text selection using iPad trackpad feature

Is there a way to do the initial selection using the just the trackpad feature? Right now, I touch where I want my selection to start, then I go down to the keyboard and do the 2 finger gesture to initialize the trackpad, which I then use to finish my selection. This does not seem right (or efficient) to me and I'm thinking I'm just not doing this right.

You can use two fingers to move the cursor, then tap with two fingers to highlight the selected word and pinch outward.
