Is there a way to set smaller margins on a TextEdit doc than the mandatory 1 inch all around? I think that there has to be.

Per the TextEdit User Guide:

Note: You can’t adjust the margins of a TextEdit document when you print it. To adjust the margins of the document when you print it, open it in Pages.

Source: TextEdit Help

You can change it manually in a text editor like BBEdit or TextMate by changing \margl1440\margr1440 to \margl1NNN\margrNNN where the margins are measured in TWIPS where 1440 twips is 1 inch. Therefore half inch left and right margins would be \margl720\margr720 and quarter inch Marins would be \margl360\margr360
