I use it only when I cannot phone someone (knowing it will annoy), when people need to get something "in writing" (address etc), or when telling I'm running late or to inform more than one of my collegues something very short and factual that does not require them to respond.
So, 40-60 I think, counting those multiple receivers.

1000, 2000, 3000 SMS's a month? Don't people have things to do? Don't people have a life to live instead of "reporting" it? I'm serious, I'm a journalist and I like to report what's going on, but text chatter? Man, I really don't get it. To me it sounds like a crutch used in order to avoid being present.

yeah i mean, people have time to text? what kind of life is that they should be wasting their time in a mac related forum instead.. oh wait i could have texted about 4 people since i started typing this

The most I've ever sent in one month, sent AND received was just over 10,000. No joke. That was pre-iPhone though. On average now, it's probably 5,000 or 6,000, and I only text my girlfriend, my mom, and 2 friends.

I hate talking on the phone :)

Hmm, two or three thousand sms's is around 100 a day on average. I'm not saying, say, 300, or 400 is "too much" but 2 or 3000 sounds exactly like "I don't do anything else than chat with ten friends constantly". Your argument is a strawman because it implies my claim was that texting in general was akin to having no life. That wasn't my argument at all.

I am texting as long as I am awake.

oh sorry man, it sounded like that i wasn't trying to argue anything it just seemed that you were saying that people had no lives because they were texting too much and that you never had enough time to text. yet you are here... but i wasn;t trying to start an argument or anything:)

That's okay. I do text. Not much, but I do text. I just think that, say, 3000 (or as that bloke with 10000 in a month!!) is telling. Especially since SMS really doesn't lend itself to thoughtful writing.
And this is the crux: I doubt that anyone has the need to send so many SMS's. How much do you have to say? *You would have to "share" most anything, mostly mondane in order to land on that amount. But then again, I don't write much if I haven't thought about what I am going to write, and what I want to say.

Over 300 a day? Wow.....

It's simply a time sink if you ask me. Instead of sending text after text and taking 20 minutes to get to the point I just call and have it done in less than 2 minutes.

3000+, but it won't be that much this month because of school and work. It'll be around 2000.

I text from the moment I wake up (waking up to a received text message) to the moment I go to sleep. Especially if I'm away from the girlfriend.

I use like 200 voice minutes a month and maybe around 500-3000 texts (depending). My billing cycle just reset on the 12th, and from the 12th till now I've sent/received 734 texts. I talk to people over texts more than I do on the phone but I would rather have a phone convo if the conversation is intense/lengthy.

Anyway I am so glad there is a feature to disable auto-correction, that thing was a major PITA for me.

Between 500-700

Between friends, work, twitter, facebook and bank's and informational services.

Well i HATE talking on the phone to friends. I don't know why, but i just like texting instead. When i'm on the phone i feel like whoever is by me can listen in.

wow talk about paranoid. Are you having top secret world changing conversations lol?

In the US does recievieng a text message count as part of tyour usage allowance?

Anyway I send about 4 a day. And even with that low a number I get frustrated at the basic dictionary that apple provides, why no add to dictionary option, and no matter how many times I type UK it always want to change it to I'm.

Yes, it does. So the count isn't how much you send, its how much you are sent too.

I mainly just text to Google Mobile for flight information. With about twenty flights every month, I probably use about fifty texts due to a few random ones being thrown in by friends or co-workers.

I receive about 80 a week and send about the same. So I guess that would be between 500 and 1000? That's how I voted anyway...

I also find texting so much easier sometimes. For example, if you're sitting in class and bored.

Or if you don't really want to have a whole conversation with someone but want to quickly see what's going on. For example, everyone knows those people that talk your ear off EVERY time you talk.

Lastly, I text if I'm with people and don't want to be rude by either having a conversation with someone on the phone or excuse myself to somewhere else so I can have the same conversation.

Just for those people that don't understand the "whole texting thing"...

I text anywhere between 2500 and 3000 a month but I text a lot of people and have landscape text on my iphone so it mAkes it easy, I like text because it doesn't stop or interrupt your conversation with someone else, plus it's not loud and distracting to others and you can do it during class haha

LOL, you're one of the people who doesn't think it "interrupts" the conversation you have? Man, it just shows you're not present in the conversation you're having, thus that "original" conversation or person doesn't interests you. If you were my co-worker you'd be fired. I am serious. Good luck in school, though …

You can find out how many texts you've used by:
Go to wireless.att.com
Login / Create Account
Then go in the middle of the page, and hit the data tab. If you are in a family group, select your number first.

You can also call *3282# and a text will be sent with number of texts remaining. Not sure this would work if you have unlimited.

I access my AT&T Wireless account in Pageonce. Works great.

Texting is just the quiet method to being rude.
