I have a few people I want to text but I dont want them to have my original cell number. Is there an iphone app or jailbroken app that I can use to show a different number? Some of them also dont have a iphone. So Ping or other iPhone apps from the store wont work for them, thanks..

GoogleVoice Mobile (GV Mobile) has been available in Cydia since he got kicked off the App Store. Works perfect for what you want to do.

i agree, i use google voice just for this reason...there is no way the other end of your text message can figure out who you are.

do you even need the cydia app to do this? I thought if you responded from google voice if it got texted to your phone then it'd show your google voice info? Is this not true?

    Simple solution:

If you know the person's carrier (AT&T, Verizon, or T-Mo), go to their website and send a text via that way. You don't need to include your number or anything.

I have TONS of solutions! Get excited!

First email. If you know their carrier you can do it via sms gateways. You can google it to find out how.

Second instant message. Google, AIM, Yahoo all offer messaging to cellphones. You just put in the number and type away.

Third Google Voice. You can do it via the website if you have an account. Works just fine. Then they have your GV number though.

Lastly TextPlus. It's an iPhone app that lets you text people for free. Doesn't use your real number. I use it all the time because I only have the 200 message plan.

The text message tool on the AT&T website requires a "from" number, don't know what would happen if you entered a fake number.
