Still probably won't convince my boyfriend to downgrade from his grandfathered $70 truly unlimited plan. That's the plan that keeps him from seriously considering Verizon lol. He had AT&T before and won't go back. T-Mobile has been more affordable.

A small part of me hopes that AT&T would add rollover data so Verizon would do the same. But that's probably wishful thinking since Big Red didn't do rollover minutes before.

That's really the issue with this announcement. I don't see how this is a great thing. It's nice, for sure. I just don't believe it's practical for most users other than for them to say "Look at all this rollover data I have in reserve!"

It means nothing if your data plan covers your usage on a consistent basis. And if your data plan doesn't cover your usage on a consistent basis, then you will have no rollover to fall back on because you would have used it all in a short period of time.

That's why I don't think AT&T needs to respond to this. It's just not valuable to the vast majority of wireless users. But AT&T has been responding to TMobile but there are still things that need to respond to that are way higher on the list than this. Let's get white-listed data for music providers first, then we can start working on other things.

Bingo. I have a TMobile line I carry around in my old iPhone 5S. The only time I've had a positive experience with them is in NYC, that's it. Their network is pure junk in the Northeast. It's downright hilarious to watch my TMobile phone drop down to EDGE/GPRS in the middle of Boston while driving around. Almost every underpass, tunnel, etc. No Service/GPRS/EDGE, while AT&T/VZW have no problems with LTE.

Agreed. To me coverage is everything. Can not remember when I did not have coverage or even dropped a call. That is priceless even without data rollover!

Scoff away, I could care less. I tried T-Mo three times and I made my choice. For the extra cost I will pick coveage any day.

:)

You do know your experiences is not the same as everybody else's experiences, right? How do you explain all the people that are having great coverage now with Tmobile? They been building their LTE network out at a steady pace and it shows.

On Verizon I was getting slower LTE an paying $110 a month, (unlimited) . T-Mobile's network then expanded and now I'm getting faster LTE and pay only $50 a month for unlimited as well as five gigs of hotspot on the two line family plan. Are you saying, for all of us saving money like that, we should only think the way you think and give up that savings?

It's obvious if they haven't expanded your area yet, that the best thing for you is to stick with the carrier that does give you service, but don't act like your experience in your area has any bearing on other areas that T-Mobile network shines.

Oh. We're in the same area. It's true. But. Unlimited though so given that

The irony in this post in huge. Are you not cheerleading TMobile right now?

I'm cheerleading an effort that brings downward pricing pressure that will benefit everyone. I see that as different from advocating the status quo, which baffles me why anyone would happily advocate continued higher pricing and restrictive data caps.

Sorry, I forgot the rule about TMobile here. Ignore all the negatives about their trash network and parade their mediocre Uncarrier moves around. Every carrier sucks compared to TMobile.

Nice straw man, but no, that's not the message. AT&T has a great network... or they have a horribly overloaded, overburdened network with little capacity that necesstitates charging high prices, depending on who asks them. And that's the point. AT&T (and their contracted customers, apparently) will gladly talk up the superirority of the network, until people wondering why that superior network is heavily capped... in which case OMG, too many people are data hogs and the network just can't handle it.

Competition is a GOOD thing. It relieves poor, overburdened AT&T of the data hogs, while getting them to consider better pricing models for their customers on that totally unburdened, superior network.

Oh right... I forgot the rule where anyone talking common sense is immediately trashed by people who have self-vested interests in maintaing a duopoly. My bad! You're right, T-Mobile's actions are immaterial, and AT&T is thoroughly justified in taking as much money as they can from people while offering as little data as they can get away with. And anyone who dares save a little money on a network that works well enough for them is just crazy stupid.

What AT&T needs to do is stop throttling me at 5GB.

I still have a cheaper bill w/unlimited (5gb Throttled) than I would anywhere else.

This.

I was close to dropping my UDP when they had that double promo going, but it just doesn't make sense to me. On average I use about 4 GBs/month so I'm fine where I'm at.

On another note, I don't see AT&T matching up to this, they already offer unlimited talk & text, so they make a bulk of their revenue on data and overages.

The net neutrality crowd doesn't like whitelisting of content providers, so if the FCC gets its way those kinds of things may be going away in the future.

What's the point of unlimited, if the network is subpar? I can use the same argument for Sprint.

Not really, as tmobile network is nowhere near as bad as sprint. Use to be, but not anymore. They continue to put money in their network an it shows. So the point is, if you're in a good area, with great LTE, then having unlimited for many that don't travel much, saving $50 to $60 is a no brainier.

I started this thread to Thank T Mobile for saving us all money, anyone that doesn't see that is the case, needs to take a good look back before T Mobile stepped up and see how much the customer on an avg is saving now!!! Yes some may not be saving, but the 95% of us that are, are happy for T Mobile's aggressive plans!!! Im on att and I have given up a grandfathered unlimited plan because of the savings it made to switch our 4 iphones over to shared. Wish I could help T Mobile, but we live in a very rural area that they don't service very good. Keep up the good work T Mobile!!!!!

I'm not sure I agree (or strictly disagree with this). I have no idea what percentage of their users are still in unlimited. I have even less of an idea of what percentage of those on unlimited would leave as a result of the unlimited plan officially ending.

T-Mobile disclosed the percentage of subscribers on unlimited plan, which has 5GB Hotspot/tethering limit: 20%.

Having said that, should T-Mobile choose to eliminate unlimited plan, existing subscribers will undoubtably grandfathered in.

I seriously doubt Data Stash (rollover) is a move toward eliminating unlimited plan, however, as T-Mobile announced unlimited family plan just a week ago.

I've stuck with AT&T - but T-Mobile's recent activities have:
  • Lopped $70 off my monthly cellular bill (that's $840 per year in my pocket)
  • Doubled my data from 10 gig to 20 gig for free (bye bye overages!)
Thanks T-mo! AT&T must hate you. Keep it up :)

This is so variable from person to person though.

For instance, in my area, I'd choose Sprint over TMobile 365 days a year.

What's the point of a purportedly superior network if the carrier's going to ream you with overage fees, and you don't care about rural/outlying area coverage?

I'm switching to TMo. Been considering it for a while now. ATT recently caught on and forced a data plan on my son's phone sealed the deal for me.

On ATT I have two grandfathered unlimited on iPhone 6, and 3 voice only. Moving to TMo I'll have data service on all lines. Two unlimited (plus the 5GB of tethering) lines, 3 lines with 1GB, and a 5GB plan for tablet, all for $20 less than what I'm paying ATT. The only thing I'll miss is the cross-upgrades from the dumb phone lines, giving me two upgrades a year. It's ok, I think my yearly (or bi-yearly) phone upgrade is no longer needed, not that it was ever a need lol. Not much more can be done on the current smartphone hardware.

PS where I live and places I usually go (northern NJ to NYC and Queens), TMo is the same to much faster than ATT. It all depends on where u are. Take up on TMo's test drive offer and see for yourself.

I agree. I live in south jersey and commute to NYC and PA a lot. Service is near perfect all around. I stream HD videos 4 hours a day on my commute.

I had unlimited data with AT&T (grandfathered) and I was scared to give it up because once you do, that was it. I didn't even really know how much data the phones on our plan was using. When I called and went over the usage for the year, it was clear we didn't need it and were paying unnecessarily for it. Even the AT&T rep agreed it wasn't necessary to pay for unlimited and AT&T was making more $ off me with data usage under 2GB/mo on 2 phones. Besides, with the wifi in my home and at work (which is where I spend 95% of my time), cell data usage is minimal. Also, there are so many wifi hot spots out there to jump on in your travels, it seems like using cell data is minimized more and more.

So yes, it may be the future to offer roll over data, but the usage is also less and less with more ways then ever to access it though wifi which may slowly eliminate the need for the unlimited plans. I'm sure other cell companies besides TMO know this…… I'm not claiming to know what the future holds, but everyone else here seems to speculate, so I am too :)

At the end of 2016, if T-Mo has an amazing network, i.e., I have more than one bar of LTE in my apartment, I will consider leaving Verizon. Currently, I only get one bar of LTE with about 8mbps down and constantly fluctuate between EDGE and LTE.

Looks like you're in Chicago. They're pretty starved on spectrum there so unless they won some AWS in the recent auction there, you're probably not going to see any change by then.

If that's the case, I'll stick with good ole Big Red. $220/mo for 10GB of data and 3 lines ain't bad.

Thank you T Mobile, been telling AT&T to offer rollover data

Same here. The only way Verizon customers will get rollover data is if AT&T follows T-Mobile, and they probably will.

Stuck with At&t but if I ever do change carriers I would check out T-mobile. As long as there coverage is the same as At&T's I would be fine.

Same here. I've been debating between staying with Verizon and moving to T-Mobile for a few months and I decided to stay with Verizon. I travel a lot during the summer months and I need excellent coverage when I'm going towards isolated areas. I've heard that T-Mobile isn't the best when you go outside the big city.

I have a big fear of something tragic happening to me while I'm in the middle of nowhere and I have no way to call/text/surf to get myself out of the situation. When T-Mobile gets better coverage in the boonies, I'll switch over.
