im sorry to anyone this annoys but ive been looking at the apple site and reading various pages and i cant find out if ATV does what i want it to out the box.

basically i want to know if you have it paired with an itunes library and the mac that came from switched off, does the ATV play tracks from its own audio out, or only over airtunes to an airport express?

im thinking about buying one so i can stream music round the house to a couple of AE's but i want it to act as one itself to save me 65 quid as it'll be sat next to the third stereo anyway and it seems silly having to buy another AE when the ATV has a perfectly good audio out.

i love most f the apple things i own, but somehow i suspect they are going to annoy me on this one!!!

also and this im guessing is a non hacked no no, will it see/mount a drive connected to an airport extreme?

(please excuse bad spelling in this post, my 2 week old second MBP has a knackered "o" key already! thanks jobs)

    Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_0_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5B108 Safari/525.20)

don't know you seem to be in a bit of jam there, it will probably play from the apple tv out and not airtunes, I think you have to pick that separatly or something, anyway mabye ask someone at apple online or something, there more familiar with it!!! Ha

ask the people at the apple store, but im pretty sure the ATV can do what you would like it to do. although, while you're there, ask them to fix the "o" key on your MBP, since it's a defect and they cover defects for no extra charge.

I think I understand what you are asking for so I will give it a shot.

EDIT: I re-read your note and you cannot stream from ATV to Airport Express' utilzing Apple Hardware. There may be some third party box that allows audio out from ATV to stream to AE boxes. Unless Apple provides a software update that allows AE's to run form ATV vs. your computer iTunes, this is not possible on Apple Hardware alone.

You have three options when it comes to ATV.

    1) Use it as an airtunes device. This means it will work the exact same way your Airport Express' do. You control all music via iTunes on your computer.

    2) Sync your music to ATV and use it as a stand alone media player. This means no computer has to be on or running. You control all music via ATV device and not your computer, but the content has to be synced to your ATV before this will work.

    3) Stream music from your iTunes library. This means that it will work the same as option 2, but your iTunes library must be open on the host computer and ATV will just pull audio from your computer. Again, all controls for music are driven from your ATV and not the computer.

Note: You can do both option 2 and 3 if you ATV hard drive is not large enough to sync all content. This means for synced content you don't need iTunes open and if your iTunes is open you can gain access to any media that was not synced.

thanks for the info, it seems without copious hacking the ATV wont do what i want, i suspected that might be the case, have to go down the mac mini route, i did debate getting a ATV and trying to get 10.4 on it so i could run itunes full but i suspect it'll be a nightmare and not worth the cash it saved.

is a little frustrating though, i guess its just the apple way, carefully fitting hardware into their business plan, cause the ATV could easily have more features, but i suppose they want to sell mac minis to people who want those.

    thanks again

I am not sure if i understood everything you asked, but I'll give it a shot ;-)

your question regarding airtunes, streaming and synching was answered above, but not the airport drive question.
You can mount network drives once you have hacked your ATV. There are several possibilities to do it.
I am using an smb mount for my imac and it works perfectly.
