Scaling down video on the fly at 24-30 fps is a huge drain of processing power and battery juice. Not to mention they waste space and/or bandwidth.
I'm pretty sure there's dedicated hardware to handle video decode and scaling and the difference in battery drain between playing SD and HD is likely minimal. You'd do better extending the battery life by lowering brightness. As for waste of space/bandwidth, bitrates dictate that, not resolution. A 1280x720 video at 3Mbps will consume roughly the same space as a 1136x640 video at 3Mbps. Sure, you might get a bit better PQ with the latter but I doubt it's significant enough to bother with creating 2 separate encodes. The difference from 1136x640 to 1280x720 and 1704x960 to 1920x1080 is pretty small anyway (~12.5%).

Still be nice for conversions across all devices and screen sizes.
There's nothing stopping you from tailoring an encode for each of your devices but there's also nothing wrong with sticking to standard resolutions (e.g. 1280x720, 1920x1080) for your encodes. Scaling can be done by the mobile device on the fly and you're not using the CPU to do the decoding and scaling anyway. Besides, even Android devices can vary on resolution/aspect ratio. I've used devices that are 16:9 (1280x720, 1920x1080) and 16:10 (1280x800, 1920x1200). If your Android version and player supports immersion, you actually get a more distorted picture with a 16:10 Android device when you do stretch to fullscreen than on an iPhone 5/5s (and 6 with rumored 1704x960 resolution).

Unless you're OCD and must absolutely have 1:1 pixel mapping, the not quite 720p or 1080p display isn't much of an issue. Now the iPad with its 4:3 aspect ratio, yep that one's not so ideal for playing 16:9 HD video much less 2.35:1. Way too large letterboxing.

Btw is you pic and u/n an anime reference? Seems like a worthwhile watch if you used it but I can't find much aside other forums you are a member of lol.
The pic and u/n were taken from separate anime. The u/n is in reference to Hanazawa Rui, a character from the shoujo manga/anime Hana Yori Dango/Boys Over Flowers. If you're somewhat familiar with the Japanese language, you'll know that it roughly translates to Rui's girl. I started using the u/n while I was in high school and I just can't be bothered changing it. The avatar is Tsukiyono Omi - florist by day, assassin by night from the anime Weiß Kreuz. ;)

This one, I don't get. The screen of the iPhone 5/5s is almost perfectly 16:9 (1136:640 = 1.775; 1920:1080 = 1.7777...). 1080p videos should scale almost perfectly on the iPhones. Now if you meant movies with 2.35:1 aspect ratio, obviously, you're gonna have some letterboxing if you don't want the video looking all elongated. Currently, I'm unaware of any brand-name Android smartphone with 2.35:1 aspect ratio so really, they're pretty much in the same boat as the iPhone.

Are you for real? You clearly do not know the consequences of scaling. The resolution is simply inferior.

Quite aware, thanks. I'm currently up to my elbows in AviSynth scripts and plugins trying to clean up and upscale some DVD rips (badly encoded source material) so they don't look like absolute crap on the iPad.

In the iPhone's case, you're most likely downscaling. Sure you get less PQ because of the lower resolution but it's not exactly the end of the world.

I'll reiterate: Unless you're OCD and must absolutely have 1:1 pixel mapping, the not quite 720p or 1080p display isn't much of an issue.

Every post, and this entire forum could be classed as 'first world problems'.
Apps not fitting the screen is right up there in terms of 'issues', whether they're life and death or not.

If apps don't fit right up there with the screen I will die.

I did of course mean phone-related issues.
I'm surprised that people are fine with it. I mean, all this clamour for a larger screen and then the apps stay the same size as previously...what's not to like there? :-/

Again:
Current rumors suggest the iPhone 6 (both 4.7" and 5.5") versions will have the same aspect ratio as the iPhone 5. If so, all Apple needs to do is a simple rescale same as what they did with non-retina apps on the iPad 3. What you might expect to see is just some blurriness and/or pixelation.

The app graphics will just be stretched to fit the bigger display while apps haven't been updated with higher resolution assets. This isn't going to be the same case as going from 3:2 iPhone 4S to 16:9 iPhone 5. Rather, it'll be similar to the move from 4:3 iPad 2 to 4:3 iPad 3. Apps updated for the new resolution will have sharper images and better detail. Older apps will look blurry and pixelated. However, in both cases, the apps will fill the entire screen. We won't have the letterboxing/pillarboxing that we got with the iPhone 5.

Had one app I use almost daily that only recently got updated to the 4" screen, autoblog.

Here's an idea.. no, hear me out.

Don't buy the iPhone 6, save that money for later.

Proceed to go to Walmart or whatever and make a stockpile of tissues.

Cry into your tissues while we enjoy our iPhone 6's and patiently wait for the apps to be optimized for the bigger (possible) screen.

If you choose to go with my advice, I hope that you learn that you don't need the latest piece of technology in the world, I'm sure you have other problems, and you definitely need to keep these annoying threads off of here.

Devs can have 4.7/5.5 versions ready before the phone in even announced. In theory, some may already have larger screen sizes accounted for. They have the tools to plan for this launch. Apple all but shouted from the rooftops that a bigger phone is coming.

Big title popular apps will be updated on iPhone 6 launch day similar to the iPhone 5 going from 3.5" to 4.0". Thousands of individuals have access to iOS 8 Beta. When Apple announces the iPhone 6, Xcode 6.0 will be released supporting the larger screens a month before iPhone launch. Plus the popular big title apps companies have hundreds of employees working. Don't freak out. Other then screen size, no difference from whatever iPhone you own to iPhone 6.

There were a bunch of guys moaning a while back that *one* banking app still used the iOS6 keyboard, so I think that a majority of tiny apps floating in the middle of a large screen would be somewhat of a problem...
