the startup sound prefpane doesn't seem to be working on leopard and I really need to get rid that of startup sound because I use my mac mostly during lectures and in Library ..

    ANY help will be appreciated.

wish Apple had just got rid of this stupid thing or had given us an option to do so.

If you mute the sound, the next time you restart the chime will be silent.

This worked for me (attached, freeware): StartupSoundPrefPane11b1
It'll show up under your System Prefs as Startup Sound, just click 'mute' and you won't get the chime.

Edit: Ooops.... just re-read and you've got it already (duh) .... try reinstalling it again? GL

Yeah, its better than the PC POST beep. The prefPane works great in Leopard.

No, it is not better if your goal is quietness, which is the goal of the original poster.
