Who makes that grey USB hub that attaches to the side of the MBP 2016? It's popular in YouTube videos but I can't remember the brand...

No.

I bought one of these for my 12in rMB. Good quality, works well (it does get a little warm-not hot, but warm)

I did, however, find that I actually used it very little. Between Dropbox, email, and Airdrop, I didn't need to hot-swap files with a jump drive. Didn't use the SD or Micro SD slots at all.

I'll be using it for the SD slot on the road and maybe charging my phone. At home I'll use a normal dock.

Do you use it quite a bit? Some of the amazon reviews question its build quality and one person said it was too hot to take off after two hours of use.

That's the one. Thank you!

I was considering that one myself. However I'm not sure it looks too secure, in that I think if you used it with everything connected, it could fall out easily and stuff if you knock it or move the laptop. I just grabbed a few USB-C to whatever I needed, and a USB-C - A adapter for the odd occasion. And I'll get one of the better hubs with a separate cable for the desk.

I'd like to know the speed of the sd card reader of this hub.
"The SD card slots fared just as poorly as they do using Apple’s USB-C to Type-A adapter and a generic card reader: with a “45 MBps” UHS-I Class 10 SD Card, about 33 MBps write speed and 37 MBps read rate and about 12 MBps write and 36 MBps read for an identically rated microSD card. (The MacBook with a card reader sometimes reached 14 MBps for writes, but that’s negligibly different and wasn’t consistently repeatable.)"

Yep, having looked at the reviews I wasn't convinced in the end either. I got a couple of these instead -

I think it's probably a better bet (Although I'm still concerned about the extra weight on the port, I did consider those though). If they arrive soon let me know what they're like!

The other thing as well is you'd rarely need all the ports those hubs add. So it seems futile to have a multi-adapter directly plugged in for a single USB-A port. I just need to find a decent SD card reader now for the camera bag.

Will do mate. They seem well made and light enough not to cause strain - they are tiny after all. The hub would have caused some strain no doubt.
