i don't even have an issue with the current remote.... i may cancel my order and just keep the ones we have (i was going to play musical ATVs and move the 4K ones into the bedroom and garage which have the older model BUT not 4K tvs right now anyways.... and put the new versions in the office and living room.... but may just wait....)

The only issue I ran into this morning is for some reason the Apple Store app was offering only Express shipping for $8 on the remote. No free shipping available.
Personally, I feel like this is yet another Apple Placeholder product and a true AppleTV upgrade is just around the corner.
That said, I ordered one but only because I fell for the rumors years ago and sold off my perfectly good HD and 4K. I’m not upset at the new model but, even with a new remote, I do feel like it’s going to be an identical experience to what we’ve had for the last 6 years.
And that’s perfectly fine because using the Apple TV is a great experience. I do get what you’re saying however.
If it comes out 12 months from now sure. I don't think Apple would have launched this and then 6 months from now launch a newer one.
Agreed with this. I think this is a 12+ month product cycle at this point in time. Even MacRumors' guide shows a ~700 day cycle

If anyone's looking for justification for upgrading the perfectly fine Apple TV to the 2021 model, here's what I used. 
I hate the old remote. Hate, hate, hate it! I've been looking at replacements, but the best I found was $39 for one with no Siri. So, I was going to buy the new Apple TV no matter what. But now Apple allows you to buy the remote separately for $59.
I subscribe to Apple TV+ for $10 a month or $120 a year. The 32 GB Apple TV version is $179 with free Apple TV+ for a year. Hmmm... $179 minus $120 is $59 - or the price of a new remote. So I can order the bundle for the same price as the remote alone - and get a free Apple TV box. 😁 Hey, it works for me!

Yep. Set my alarm for 5am and already had payment method and favorites set last night and couldn't add to bag. 5:05am, force closed, restarted the app (on phone), favorite could now click the add to bag, but it had some annoying error message (I forgot if it was not available or what).
Went in and SEARCHED for AppleTV and then I was able to add it to bag. Still have May 21-27th though, so that's good. My last iPhone purchase was so much smoother than this morning's weirdness.

I am wondering if I will qualify for one year free though. When I purchased the iPhone 11 Pro Max I got a year free. Then I switched to Apple One billing when it came out. I wonder if the free year would apply as a credit every month. Oh well, I am not in too much of a panic. I had a look at the term and conditions and it does not say that anywhere on the Apple TV 4K page. Including the small print. It’s a bit confusing as I thought the same as you also.
edit: it does say that it cannot be combined with other Apple TV offers. Not sure if that means a previous trial. Sounds like it does though.
My only problems were indecision about the storage. I'm still using an aTV4 with 32GB and was pretty sure I was using much of its storage. When I checked I'm using almost 30GB! I ended up paying the extra £20 for the 64GB version thinking I might play a few more games on it given the A12 processor.

where are you checking usage? i only get a listing of apps and what they are using. i can't find a total used. where do i look?
I'd installed an App called tvStorageInfo and that tell you a total, but not how that's been used.
