it seems all these 12 inch owners are coming out of the woodwork. I WISH we 17 inchers could be so fervent. sniff sniff

Okay:

I love my 17" powerbook more than any other computer I have ever owned! there is just something perfect about the blend of professional power and screen size, and the ability to bring it everywhere you go. I have only once thought the powerbook was too big to bring with me, and it is amazing how light it is. I maxed out the ram yesterday after going 5 months at 512 and the difference is fantastic! especially when I run multiple apps, or FCP both of which are amazing to use on the 17" screen. long live the 17" powerbook! :D

I have a new PB 12"and wrestled with the thought on the 15". I am glad I went with the 12". I do page layout for ads, and have a 17" spanning when I need larger work space.

Never had any regrets other than I didn't want to wait on a BTO. Do wish I had gotten the larger HDD. Though this gave me an excuse to get a FW400 80GB HDD external. I really like this combo since I can copy my PB disk and have the ability to boot the external for recovery.

i too will be getting the 12" for sure in a few weeks and havce jsut a few questions that wont change my mind either way. first- a second battery sounds nice. is there a way to charge both at once? second- the only good thing i like about my compaq laptop (which im selling) is that the battery has an indicator that you can press and see how much battery you have w/o the laptop on, does the powerbook battery have this?

thetman - yes there is an indicator on the bottom 5 small leds that lite up when a button is pressed to indicate battery life.

on the main topic - I LOVE MY PB - I was a microsoft user all my life and was actually quite content but my friends iMac convinced me to take a serious look at a PB. Its been the best computing experience of my life. Except fot the bloody one button mouse!!!! I hate it it not such a big deal on regular computing but games are a nightmare with an Apple mouse keep our microsft USB mouse to use. Also maybe wait for a new 12in to come along with a better graphics card the 5200 is good but not great and the driver support is awfull my Nvidia support on windows was brilliant but its terrible on the mac (its Apples fault) an ATI card would be a nice updatre for the 12in.

Cheers

breathe, please

alternatively, use commas

on the subject, I am in the same situation, torn between the portability of the 12" (ability to take it to class and take notes) or the power of the 15" (take it to LAN's and play WC3 or other games without any problem)

Its basically up to you to choose what you want. I advise you to go to an Apple store, hold both and see how they feel

If I had to choose between the two, I would pick the 15". It is all that and a bag of chips. I still do not understand why the 12" does not have some of the extra features, such as the backlit display, as do the 15" and the 17". For DVDs, the wider screen is perfect. All of of Apple's laptops are super portable. In the end, I have found that it is the weight of a laptop that decreases its portability, and in Apple's case the physical differences in all their laptops is an inch or two width wise and being ~5 or ~6 pounds. If a computer is a few inches longer, it is not going to make a difference in your bag. I know several people with the 15" and they all have marveled on how portable it is.

I am not a huge fan of the 12" PB. I know someone who has it, and he loves it, but I really do not know why not just get a 12" iBook--unless you like the look of the PB better. If you are into doing all those high performance things, they most likely you need the 15". If you do not require those things, then the iBook is more than adequate. I wanted a 12" and I needed a computer for primarily Word and PowerPoint. I could have gotten the 12" PB, but I liked the style of the iBook more, and I like the fact that I have mine maxed out and I still saved a bundle.

I used to write a tremendous amount before school and now in graduate school, I still write, but it is more on the technical side. The 12" is plenty big enough for writing and DVD watching. I also use my iBook for casual Photoshop and Dreamweaver.

Getting a PowerBook was not for me, but there are some adavantages of them for even a writer. For instance, the ability to do dual display. This is excellent if you need two documents open and you are writing on one and reading the other. Also, if using an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse, you can close the PowerBook, where you cannot with the iBook. Of course, I got an iCurve which worked so well and looked so classy, I stopped using the external monitors I have (one at work and one at home). Another nice point that I think is only for the 15" is that if you are somewhere where you do not have your extra monitor, the extra real estate can allow you to have two documents open at a time and you can see more of each.

IMHO, if you want a 12", get an iBook it does not sound you need the PB. If the iBook is just not for you, get the 15". It is a perfect computer and has more of the powerbook features than the 12"

Forgive my ignorance, but when you say the 12" does not have a backlit display what exactly does that mean? Was that intended to be backlit keyboard or is this some new disadvantage I was unaware of.

Many, many, many thanks to everyone who has posted their testamonials! I think I'm fully swayed towards getting a 12" (although if it has a display with no backlight...what is that, like the old gameboy handhelds where you needed to shine a light on it? That can't be right.).

Any idea when the best time to buy a 12" Powerbook will be? I can get it anytime from now until July, but no later then July because after that it's off to teach in Beijing (which is why I'm trading my spiffy imac for the PB...can't lug an imac on a plane with me).

I'd hate to buy this thing next month and have them do a speed bump the next day, but if these things won't get bumped until next December then I might as well get mine now.

Again, many, many thanks to all of you!

If you're going to China in July just go ahead and buy your PowerBook now.

I know, everyone says "wait!". If it's not January 24th, then it'll be another date just around the corner. If there's a battle cry for Mac fanatics, it's "Wait, don't buy!".

Of course, if you follow that line you'll never get a Mac!

I just happened to have been online placing an order for the 12" PB the morning the Rev. B 12" PB was announced. AND... those who had already ordered the Rev. A's which hadn't shipped got upgraded to Rev. B.

As you can tell from these posts, iBook fans are far outnumbered by 12" PB fans. Go for the 12" PB. As for the "wait!" commands... well, try to ignore them.

P.S. Backlit Display is actually Backlit Keyboard. I've made that mistake myself. Backlit Keyboards are way cool, but not having one isn't a deal breaker.
