According to my FM game, the final will be Italy v Argentina. Italy will win 2-0

I think Spain will win group H, Czech Republic might be able to edge out USA.

as I said, it was a very quick prediction table and i didn't want to go with the obvious favorites every time. in particular, Brazil is such an overwhelming favorite that it's no fun to pick them (but it's fun to watch them). besides, it's played in europe and european teams are naturally advantaged.
group E is very well balanced and i think any two teams can go through, but on paper the czechs are probably the strongest team, so if they do it would hardly be a surprise.
oh, and Spain WILL blow one of the early games, it is one of the very few LAWS of football/soccer:D

I'll put my pedantic hat on and say that the United States competed in the very first World Cup in 1930 – the Czech Republic (or, as they were then, part of Czechoslovakia) didn't enter until the following tournament in 1934.

But I'll agree with you in so far as they'll get past the US next summer.

Ok i did some counting, and USA have been in the WC 7 times and if my counting skills are correct then the Czech's have been in it 8 times. But you were right that they featured first in the WC.

It will be tough for the US to get out of the first round, but then we said that last year too. If they get one win and a tie, that should do it, or if Italy or Czech Republic gets upset in a game.

At some point, doesn't a crazy footballing nation like Spain or Italy have to win it? Or are they destined to be underachievers in the modern era?

Based on this, it stands at eight for the US, nine for the Czechs (in either of their guises), so you're right about the Czechs having an extra tournament to their name. But it will be interesting to see which one of those two teams make it out of the group (alongside Italy, who I reckon should make it through baring disaster).

for the italy,CR,US,ghana group:

CR often gets underrated... but especially their offensive mdifielders are always in for a goal (Rosicky and Nedved) and they can compared to italy deliver performance in tournaments

i would say CR first and then italy... BUT if the italians can't leave their diva like behaviours at home they migth struggle (but they might get thorugh thanks to totti anyways)

Spain group: did they give spain an easy group on purpose so that they can finally get past the first round
but i have to guess that ukraine will be number one in the group: their counterattack-playstyle is perfectly suited against spain .. and they got their big star

Indeed, we were looking forward to that one too. We're still a bit "hurt" (to put it nicely) from the last time you know :rolleyes: :D
i don't think they could have gotten together by 'design' of the draw, only european teams (necessarily, being 14) could meet teams from the same region in the group phase.

the way it is now, they could meet in the semis, but its a bit unlikely.

Too bad for Argentina, it will not move from group stage.

Holland and Serbia are taking group C, unless there is "hand of god" again.

I think Italy got spoiled with Ferrari's successes over the last 6 years, and Spain is kind of distracted currently. :p

So when do the first matches officially kick off?

9. June '06, if I'm not mistaken.

Since our own spineless team (Norway) never got this far, I'll be sheering for our neighbours, Sweden. although I'm open for bribes ;-)

Argentina will get through
Early, I hope. :) Seriously, both Argentina and Brazil have earned the right to be considered almost always a good bet, but I'd like to see some others step up. Ones I'd really enjoy seeing advance would be Ivory Coast, Netherlands, England, U.S., Ukraine and Australia. I just don't want to see Brazil or Argentina in the final.

scotland made it to world cup 98'.. not this time i guess

I know. I think we actually made it to 5 in a row, starting in 78 and going through to 98...

But we've never ever made it out of the first round and lately seem to be having trouble getting that far... I blame it on too many clubs with not enough talent in coaching or playing to develop skills in national players as opposed to buying in foreign players.

Wow. I never thought I'd see the day. A Norwegian rooting for a Swede. Amazing.

I thought Norway was all about, "It doesn't matter if you win or lose, so long as you beat the Swedes." I for one, on behalf of my Norwegian girlfriend, will be rooting against the Swedes.

Cool, thanks, I'll mark it on my calendar. :)

Ok maybe i missed a World cup. But yeah i agree that is an interesting group. Either Italy is going to do really good, or they are gonna fall flat. I am going with the first option. Italy has always been a strong team. As for czechs and the states i am going for the czechs, those chaps are ruthless!
