I've been using a 200MB plan since it became available and I haven't gone over the limit yet. Most of the time I hover around 120-150MB doing heavy email and web browsing. It's quite easy to keep it under 200 as long as you don't stream videos or music on 3G. There's Wifi everywhere I go so I have no problems with that.

While I have the unlimited plan, I have wifi both at work and at home and I end up using less than 100MB of data! I could easily live with the 200 limit! Most coffee shops - Starbucks and McDonalds - and even airports now have free wifi.

Upgrading

If I start with the 200MB plan, and decide I need more, is there any problem with upgrading to the 1GB plan? Any $18 activation fee or anything else weird? What about switching the other way? From 1 GB to 200MB?

Well, first of all, its a 2GB plan, and second, no problem to update at all, no extra cost other than the cost of the plan itself

It really depends on how you use your phone.

I've used 0MB since I've gotten my iPhone, mainly because my plan doesn't have a data plan, only casual browsing at AU$0.20 per KB. (I'd really love to get a data plan included but I still have 4 months left on the contract).

So what do I do? I simply live off the WiFi I have at home, uni, major railway stations, McDonalds and the WiFi hotspots my ISP has all over town. Obviously there are some times I would love to be connected but can't but for the majority of the situations, the above places suffice for me.

I have been using the 200mb plan. I have wifi everywhere I go so it's very easy to do it.

I'm a student who uses it for heavy email (check my email every 30 minutes) and look up stuff on wikipedia or look up the bus stop. I use it sometimes to download an app or check the news. I don't use it for video or music streaming. I rarely hit more than 50MB a month.

I could definitely survive on the 200mb plan for the most part since i work from home. My wife on the other hand streams tv shows and movies from work but she still only uses a few GB a month. We both have the unlimited plan still.

I have a 250MB plan which is fine for my needs, as I mostly use wireless at home and at work.

Non-Wifi usage is about 70MB a month, that's mainly just checking email and a bit of web browsing or Facebook when I'm not in coverage of a Wifi hotspot.

My Orange (UK) contract does include 3GB/month of wireless through BT OpenZone though, and it's rare that I can't find either a 'free' Wifi hotspot or a BT OpenZone one when I'm out.

It's streaming music and movies/YouTube that gobbles up bandwidth!

I thought I'd come by and let you guys know 2 things:

1. I ended up with an HTC G2. The price (totally "free" with contract) was too good to resist, sooo.. I ended up not going with an iPhone (would've waited until next year for that, anyway.. and I might!)

2. You're right, 200mb data is NOT HAPPENING. I've used about that much in 24 hours! (Then again, one reason I really wanted a smartphone was to stream internet radio in the car).

Thanks for your advice guys, it really did help me in making my decision. :)

I'm a college student, and have always been on the Unlimited/2 GB plan. I recently switched to the 200 MB/mo. just to save some money, and have only used 17 mb in a little over 2 weeks. Always being on campus and in the apartment-->Free wifi-->Less $!

The Unlimited/2 GB plan sounds interesting, where did you find out about it? :D

I guess if you don't need to use more than 200 megs its not worth paying for more, but $10 for 1848 more megabytes seems much more reasonable.

Me, I like the unlimited and can't do without it. I just checked, and I've used 3.4 GB this month even though I use wifi a lot too. Guess it depends on what kind of user you are.

I'm a college student too, but my campus' wifi is a disaster; It uses Aruba APs that have a habit of kicking iDevices off them (I have an iPod touch and am almost never able to actually get on the network there!!)

It's not just me, everyone I know complains about the same thing. :D Of course, they complain because in at least a handful of spots on campus there's no AT&T coverage (some of those, there's no T-Mo coverage either), the only company that has a tower on the campus is sprint (to my knowledge).

I used 7GB in September, so I couldn't survive on 200MB.

I guess you could call me a heavy user. I don't have WiFi at home or work though, and I watch a lot of Netflix

Good gawd you must live on your phone. 2237 text messages? That's about 75 a day.
