What division are they in now..?

They currently lie in the division that is two steps, or levels, down from the top division, the Premier League, the league that would have been referred to as the old third division, which is known nowadays as League One (i.e. the division below the Championship, which in turn is one level under the Premier League).

Ahh...
League One

Actually, they - Sunderland, that is, - reached the promotion play-offs last season in League One (finishing somewhere between third and sixth if memory serves) but failed to secure promotion to the Championship.

A few years ago, they had a catastrophic sequence of seasons, tumbling down two divisions in as many years.

Talking of the management merry go round, I see Sunderland sacked their manager today.

The timing appears stupid to me...Sunderland are looking for new owners, and a deal with Dell's owner appears to be falling through as we speak. Surely any new owners that arrive will want to choose a manager, so why chuck Ross now? Whoever comes in now will probably be sacked when the ownership changes, and picking an interim manager to step in for an undefined amount of time would inject even more uncertainty into the squad.

To true. It’s not like they are doing that badly in the league. They are only 4 points off second. Yes Ipswich look strong for winning the league, but they shouldn’t really be in the third tear of the football league either.
Sleeping giants and all that.

The only remaining course that this sacking indicates is that the current ownership intend to replace Ross with another "permanent" manager and hope the new fellow can boost results enough to make Sunderland easier to sell to the next interested bidder that comes along.

In other words, it's another go at the roulette wheel.

I'm sure the vast majority of us have watched the "Sunderland 'Til I Die" docuseries (on Netflix in the US). If you haven't, I highly recommend it. The series chronicles the club in the season after they got relegated from the Premiership, and it's a pretty sad tale as they get relegated again.

One of my two brothers supports Sunderland - and they have broken his heart more often than he cares to recall.

He did recommend that documentary, but I was away when it was broadcast initially, and thus, didn't get to see it.

I will check it out.

Scotland turned over again...is there no bottom for them? For a moment there I really thought Northern Ireland had a shot at a major upset, but the Dutch get it done.

No, there is no bottom for Scotland.

And I suspect that Northern Ireland may have peaked in 1982, unfortunately.

Poor performance from England. We deserved to lose.

Agreed.

Apart from both Jordan Pickford and the revived, rejuvenated Harry Kane - who were both good - and without whom it could have been a lot worse - they were pretty poor.

Republic of Ireland look decent under Mick McCarthy, but they just have no goals in them at all, and it continues to cost them.

Ireland desperately need a goalscorer.

Unfortunately, Ireland have needed a goalscorer since St Patrick was a boy.

Even in the days when Jack Charlton managed them - a time when they could field several seriously good players - scoring goals was something that never came easily to them.

If you look at the republic of Ireland's all-time top goal scorers, few have a strike rate better than about 1 in 4, and apart from major outlier Robbie Kean, nobody in the last half century.

Yes, I remember that; at a time when their defence was pretty solid, - they were difficult to score against - and their midfield ranked as among the best in the world, - back during the time when they were managed by Jack Charlton - other than from set-pieces at which they weren't too bad, they always had a difficulty finding the net of their opponents, especially from open play.

England looking very strong.

Bulgaria looking very... racist.
Who? This guy?

Doesn’t seem to be affecting the performance though!
