@comphelp I see what you mean, but…

Looking at the newly released, massive populare M1 MBA and MBPs and the already rumored updates and redesigns. I honestly Think Apple more see the potentential large and fast upgrade cycle compared to releasing the two products together. Especially as Apple has not (I believe) has promoted the new A12 ATV as gaming friendly in the same way they did the a10x - all focus is on media consumption, and low power. They will just say that a gaming focused ATV is a newish product-line not meant to compete with the A12 ATV but more with PS/Xbox. People will rush to buy no matter what.

And the A12 ATV is still a fantastic and powerfull device for streaming For most people.

just my thoughts based on absolutely no real information 😊😉

If Apple are to release a gaming version, I think we'll have to wait a while for that. Given a bunch of people have just purchased this "new" A12 version, I can't see Apple wanting to upset them all by releasing a new model in under 12 months.
Although they did just that with the original Apple TV, which was succeeded within months with an Apple TV 4K…

I don't think so. Apple TV HD was released in 2015 and Apple TV 4K was released in 2017. (original ATV was released all the way back in 2007)
I stand corrected - when I bought my 4th gen at launch, at least in my memory it was superseded very quickly… my age addled brain, I guess…

Upset? I think the media folks are quite happy to have earc/HDMI 2.1(when it's enabled) and for those that use the HomePods as speakers. Heck, even the raised black issue is better. I can see why gamers or those who focus on games are upset.

That's me, the HDMI2.1 is a big upgrade over the ATV 4K, at least for my Samsung QLED TV.

I agree, if you game, I don't see buying the new model, but I don't game on my ATV.

So once Apple runs out of A8 chips, we’ll see ATV HD gone, then 64GB ATV 4K A12 based at $179, then M1 based ATV Pro with 64GB at $249, 128GB at $299, and 256GB at $399 would be my guess. ATV HD isn’t long for this world, Apple is most likely just trying to work their way through remaining A8 chip inventory.

The new ATV is a great product media streaming. I also have an HDMI2.1 tv - However, I believe that what the new ATV does is currently also within HDMI2.0 standard. With eARC only being needed to play tv-sound over HomePod if that is enable.

I’m starting to believe that too!

All I can say is that it made a difference in the picture. I seem to remember the old one had different chroma settings -- the old one only going to 4:2:2, and the new one says 4:4:4.

So far, nothing I have played has stayed at 444. It drops to 422.
