I do not, for the life of me, understand how Spurs are currently fourth in the table.

Yes, the table doesn't lie, but, this season, all season, Spurs have been poor. At times, they have been dreadful, rescued time and again by the endlessly exhausted genius of Harry Kane.

They have been inconsistent ("Spursy"), erratic, and utterly unreliable. They have lost nine games so far this season, yet, somehow, inexplicably, defying logic, or form, somehow they lie - they are lying - in fourth place, a full six points ahead of Liverpool in fifth.

Actually, my post was prompted by the headline of the report on their game against Nottingham Forest, which they won by three goals to one, which reads "Kane double tightens Spurs' grip on fourth (place)".

Because Chelsea and Liverpool have been worse, and Newcastle have forgotten how to score after their blistering start. Apart from the top 2 the rest of the league has been somewhat average.

Sigh.

You are absolutely correct.

My question was half rhetorical, and half baffled, bewildered stupefaction, given Spurs' season so far.

Yes, I don’t like it and I didn’t buy it.

As for the Lineker affair, first off it’s just so odd to be talking about this as I walk past the National Football Museum in Manchester (flying back to the states early tomorrow)…

Anyway, it just shows how polarized the world is today. People who shout that this or that should be apolitical are being unrealistic. Virtually nothing is apolitical anymore because the West is deeply divided on fundamental issues.

One of the first things I saw after arriving in Carlisle was a ragged little protest in front of a hotel that apparently housed a few asylum seekers. So you can’t hide from this anywhere. Lineker should have chosen his words differently (references to the Nazis, however oblique, should just always be avoided) but I agree with him in the broad sense. Now they’re talking of banning Attenborough for pointing out scientifically-established facts about global ecosystems?

The BBC is a real political football but if anyone thinks it can be de-politicized they are delusional.

I have no answers but this affair should put paid to the notion that we can realistically segregate politics and football. When I teach anthropology I use football as a tool for understanding the culture (including politics) of different places. They are indelibly intertwined.
Nor I. NSC is the free again this weekend though...

From what I gather I'll get a free subscription if I buy a season ticket... so my son and I are seriously considering getting two seats.

Do you have Crew season tickets?

That is one the worst red card calls I’ve ever seen. Absolute disgrace from the ref and VAR. Casemiro must be wondering what English refs are smoking.

Another Red for Casemiro, meanwhile Trossard is dismantling Fulham, and West Ham still in it.

Arsenal (playing away) lead Fulham by three goals (scored by three different players, Magalhaes Gabriel, Gabriel Martinelli, and Martin Odengaard) to nil going into half-time.

And Gabriel Jesus is on the bench, a welcome sight.

To warm (and delighted) applause, Gabriel Jesus has come on as a sub for Arsenal, - for the first time since he was injured at the World Cup - at the 77th minute.

Not sure a draw is enough for us. 16 shots to Villa’s 9. 12 corners to their 1. But still a goal apiece.

A draw is a point; as long as you are putting points on the board during each game, any sort of point, - because your immediate competitors will, inevitably, lose some of their coming matches, - you are taking steps to improve your position in the table, and taking steps to secure safety.

You don't need to escape the bottom three today, - rather, you do need to be above the bottom three on the final day of the season; today, you need to take steps to ensure that this can happen, and that means putting yourself in a position to be able to take advantage of mistakes made by others, in addition to improving your own game.

We are out of the bottom three on goal difference. But we play City next. I’m sure you’ll be rooting for us then!

Yes, I have just noticed that.

In fact, this week-end, there has been considerable movement - though not yet of the muscial chairs variety - in the bottom six, with most posting good results (or, at least, securing points of some description to put on the board).

Bournemouth - who had leapt up to 16th when they defeated Liverpool - are, with the latest results, now back in the drop-zone, at 18th. Everton's victory see them at 15th, with a small cushion; West Ham's point today levered them out of immediate danger.

And both Southampton and Leeds - who have started and ended the week-end among the bottom three, also secured a point a piece.

But we play City next. I’m sure you’ll be rooting for us then!

Undoubtedly.

With extra passion, you can rest assured.

That was easy peasy lemon squeezy.
Back to 5 points clear at the top.

No, nothing is very easy peasy at the time.

Rather, it is only easy peasy with the clarity afforded by the twenty-twenty vision of hindsight.

When we were three nil up at half time, I blush to admit that I was still tense.

@Apple fanboy: Today, West Ham's goal came from a penalty; I've just been studying the table.

They have scored 24 goals so fat this season; how many of those came form open play, and how many from set pieces?

I am willing to wager that the vast majority of these goals came from set pieces.

Obviously, - if you are unable to score from open play - in turn, this means that you must seize every chance to score from a set piece, you must convert the vast majority of these opportunities, you must make them count; you don't really have the luxury of missed penalties, in other words.

Most of our goals last season were scored from set pieces. It was our specialty. That and Antonio and Bowen had a good partnership.
This season we aren’t scoring as many. We are letting in more. Yet fundamental nothing has changed.
Worrying times.

Well, if most of your goals - both last season (which I hadn't noticed) and this season (yes, this is fairly striking) - have been scored from set pieces, then, it is imperative that you make each and every set piece count, as you will not really be in a position to add to your goal count from open play by much.

Obviously, some sort of half decent striker is required, but this is not something you will be in a position to attempt to address until the next transfer window opens in the summer.

Until then, you must focus on set pieces to try to produce goals, and tighten up your defence.

Both of these observations make West Ham's alleged interest in Anthony Martial and Harry Maguire all the more puzzling.

I might've haven wrong about Arsenal. They look the real deal, and have an aura about them.

Granted they've had some luck by having most of their first 11 fit throughout. And key moments going their way.
They also made use of the Jan window unlike previous seasons.

But overall they've also been the most consistent team in the division and played the best football. Hence the table doesn't lie.

I hope they do it...it'll make more of an interesting story. And i don't think any rational football fan would begrudge them.

April will be decisive for them i think. They need to not lose to Liverpool or City, and win the other games.
