But the captain, Jorge Costa, here holding the cup with Vítor Baía (the GK) passed away today at 53.

He was the current football director at FC Porto and suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. Despite swift assistance nothing could be done.

Isak have to train alone 😓
He is just allowed to train at Newcastle's facilities after the team has left. I really hopes he gets to Liverpool soon.

Newcastle works on signing Benjamin Šeško from RB Leipzig, and then they let Isak go - but the club is in a tough situation as the transfer window closes soon.

Edit: Benjamin Šeško seems to have chosen Manchester United.

NUFC’s last 2 transfer windows turning into a nightmare. Best player Isak about to be poached by LFC and Sesko has snubbed them for Utd. Wilson gone to WHU. Gordon is their last decent forward player.

So many top players from overseas would prefer to play in London. The two Manchester clubs and Liverpool have an attraction of their own (even if it is largely historic for one of those clubs!).

Maybe it has something to do with the owners because it does seem strange to me that Newcastle is the only Saudi Arabia owned team who have tons of money to spend and yet the top available players do not want to move there. They also have what nearly all players want and that is champions league football and still no seems to want to move to them. A club rich with money and in the champions league and they cannot get players to sign for them. It has to go deeper than it being a Eddie Howe issue as to why players do not want to sign for Newcastle.
 
Newcastle has always been viewed as a stepping stone club. Saudi billions won't change that, at least not right away. If they can sustain last year's successes, it'll go a long way to establishing their credibility, but it's hard to stay at that level.

Sesko to Man Utd is not one I saw coming, but I'm pleased. He will be an improvement on Højlund, but moving from the Bundesliga to the PL is a huge step up in intensity and competitive quality. Hope it works out.

It's harsh on Højlund, but I don't think he's cut out for the PL. I can see him doing well for himself back in Italy.

Man Utd still need a new keeper and central mid, but there are supposedly deals in the works... and the funds to make them happen.

Women: possibly one of the English Arsenal women, a Champions League win AND a Euro Championship is hard to overlook. Though any of the Lionesses could and should win, IMHO. But I don't know who deserves it the most.

Men: Since there were no competition for the National Teams (no, I don't count the Nations League, or whatever it's called) I think any of the PSG players that won Champions League should get it, probably Donnarumma or Dembele (I don't think Kwadzilla (sp?) is consistent enough to be a real contender). I don't think that Chelsea's Cole Palmer will get it even if he had a brilliant "World Cup".

I can't vote in men's as I haven't heard about half of these guys - sorry about that.
In women's group, I have a fairly good check on most of them.
As I usually get accued of only caring for the Swede's, I can honestly say that non of the Swede's here gets any vote from me 😤

The 5 Women I nominate - in no particular order - are:
- Caroline Graham Hansen - Norway, Barcelona

- Hanna Hampton - England, Chelsea

- Marta - Brazil, Orlando Pride (just because she really deserves it - but sure, she is past her prime, but still she's one of the most certain nominee's for me.

-Mariona Caldente - Spain, Arsenal

-Sandi Baltimore - France, Chelsea

On the men's side, it should be Dembélé. It's not a strong field of performances from last season, but he was the most consistent attacking player on a UCL-winning team and finally fulfilled his vast potential. Vitinha is also a valid choice.

I'd like to see Marta win it. It'll probably be one of the English players, not sure who.

For Men you can't really see past Ousmane Dembélé. Its quite a turnaround for someone who used to show up late to training because he overslept from playing video games

For Women i agree it probably should go to an English Arsenal player for Euros and UCL but it probably wont

For the women I think it will be Chole Kelly, she is a champions league winner with Arsenal and a European Championship winner with England and she scored the goal that won them the Euro's again. Leah Williamson could steal it from Chole due to Leah being England's captain and putting in a captain's performance to get the team to retain the Euro's as well as being a champion league winner with Arsenal. Next should be Alessia Russo, champions league winner and Euro's winder. Lucy Bronze then comes next being league winner with Chelsea and a Euro winner with England. If the top 3 are not from the England team then it is fixed because apart from the other England team ladies in for a shout, nobody else has come close to matching what any of the England ladies have done.

The owner has been struggling for months to pay wages on time to the players and staff and late payments to HRMC. Many critics say he has over priced the club which is why he is struggling to sell it. It's Derby County all over again, I can see it and what did we see happen to Derby? the league hit them with points deductions and fines for not paying the players on time and not meeting game requirements because they could not field a full team sometimes because of injuries to players. How many more first team players are Wednesday going to lose because if they keep losing more then they will not be able to meet league game requirements which will result in points deductions.

This is how it started with Derby, not being able to meet league requirements, they got hit with points reductions, fines and transfer embargos. This is why if the owner does not sell and sell now I can see Wednesday going the same way as Derby County.

Given that the Championship has started today, and that the Charity Shield - traditionally deemed the curtain-raiser for the new season, even if it is generally considered to be something of a ceremonial encounter - is scheduled to take place tomorrow, it seems the appropriate time to start a thread for the new football season.

Thus, I have just now started a thread for the 2025-2026 Football Season.
