M.G. Siegler had some thoughts on it the other day:
Anonymous:
Curious about your thoughts on the iPhone 5c. Do you think Apple views it as a failed experiment, or do you think they will bring back colorful plastic iPhones in any meaningful way?

It sure *sounds* like they’ll be bringing back the colorful iPhone in at least some capacity in the future. I’m not sure it was a failed experiment, but I’m certain it wasn’t a rousing success either (or some variation would still be on the market).

I actually quite liked the device. And found the design “fun” in an Apple way. It sure seems like the company loved it for their advertising campaigns we well.

The real question, if Apple is indeed planning on an “iPhone 6c” is *when* they would launch it? Could they do it off-cycle from the other iPhones?

I can see them possibly doing something next year like this. Come fall 2016 when the 5S gets phased out, I can see Apple doing a "6C" or whatever, where guts from the 6 get put into a 4" body. This will be done to appease those who still prefer the 4" body to the 4.7"/5.5" varieties of the 6/6+.

Of course, I don't know if I see them offering it in a variety of colors, since Apple is pretty set on the silver/gold/space gray color set now it seems.

I wish they would bring the 'c' back, i liked them, i got 2 for family members and they love them. Maybe launch a 6c early next year? No reason the 'c' has to launched in September like the standard iPhone usually is. Could be good for Apple to do this, stagger the launch of products a bit across the year instead of everything being in the autumn/fall.

I don't understand the "5c failed" comments. I see LOTS of them. There are a lot of people out there who want something fun, but want to stick with Apple. The colors are fun and show a bit of personality. My wife loves her blue 5c and has absolutely zero interest in the iPhone 6 line. We'd normally have replaced hers this year but because there is no 6c equivalent, she's sticking with her older, slower iPhone. Apple is missing out on sales, I guarantee it. Maybe not 6s/+ number of sales, but sales nonetheless. If Apple offered a 6c in a similar body style to the 6 (rounded corners, but all plastic) I'd be highly tempted by it, to be honest. I like the plastic of the 5c myself and would prefer it over the touchy aluminum. But what do I know - I'd also love to see Apple go back to the glass-backed style like the 4/4S.

It was a good idea but just wasn't cheap enough.
I think this was the issue, it was too cheap and took away from their 5s profit margins. Hence why they started to create a larger / more expensive version of their premium device. While it was a sales disappointment in the USA, I do believe it sold much better overseas.

Not to mention that, at least Stateside, it was a great (by which I mean attractive at renewal upgrade time) Free on Contract device. I know for a fact that I had quite a few friends who were enticed by that sales model for the 5C and still happily use theirs.

With what looks like the end of contract subsidized phones in full force with the major carriers here in the US, I have to wonder if that was part of why no 5C successor came to market. When people are being driven to look at the full price of an iPhone, why would they want to pay $549 for the base 5C when just a hundred bucks more gets them onto the flashier main iPhone?

I had a iphone 5c for two years (preordered it at the beginning).

I just got a 5s last week and am really happy to finally have the phone that I wanted all along.

That being said, I actually miss the soft and "warm" feel of the 5c. Really. I actually felt a little nostalgic on the bus this morning thinking about the smooth edges of it and felt a little sad that they didn't wrap the 5s in plastic for the $450 option.

Of course I get that Apple wants the premium look, and I provided countless complaints about the cheap plastic and low resale value. After I got over the complaints (it took a little over a year), and finally got my 5s, I am missing the feel in hand of the 5s. On the plus side, I now have a phone that won't slip out of my hand! Love these chamfered metal edges :)

Hopefully Apple offers a plastic option again in the future, but I doubt it... I grew attached to the 5c only after two years of use. The premium look of the 5s was an immediate attachment.

I always liked the 5c, and would have bought one if not for the older innards.

The plastic takes the odd scuff and knock much better, and even though I pretty rarely see one (they definitely sold poorly in the places I work and visit), it's almost always without a case.

Give me a 6c with a bigger battery and for the first time I'd consider getting something other than the most expensive iPhone on sale. Maybe that's the point...

For sure! I think I agree with people who scream "planned obsolescence" (to a degree). iOS 9 has that split second delay of opening apps, and I'm curious to see if the new devices with 3D touch have the same issue.

iOS 9 on older devices is not as quick to respond to app opening as iOS 8. It's very very minute though.

All in all, I'm sure that Apple wants you to buy their newest device.

I liked the 5c, although I didn't own one. I'm not sure why there were always so many "5c was a failure" remarks when I saw TONS of them, and still do. It was much more popular than people here made it seem. Although something I noticed that was interesting: I don't think I've ever seen a yellow or green 5c in the wild. It was always white, blue, and the occasional pink. I really loved the yellow!

I kinda wish Apple would come out with another "C" model, but I want one that's still flagship. I know this will never happen, but I want the latest internals in a colorful, plastic shell. I'm kinda tired of the dull black/silver/gold options.

I still see a few 5Cs kicking about in the wild, certainly as many as 5/5S combined.

I think what's interesting about it is that many people didn't seem to realise that they were using a re-wrapped iPhone 5, to them it was a 5S without the fingerprint sensor. That's not to say EVERYBODY thought that, but to the low use crowd it was aimed it, that seemed to be the general belief.

I'm using it and loving it even now. I just bought it in fact, not but a day ago.
I don't see what's wrong with it :p

Personally since I am in wireless sales for a major carrier, I have sold plenty of iPhone 5c's in my day.

A lot of times I would sell to those who were first time smartphone users, those who just wanted an iPhone, couldn't afford higher end iPhones, older people, or young teens/kids.

I also have the 5C in yellow 32GB and it my go to phone for the weekends and nightclub. It is small and I don't have to worry about denting/scratching the aluminum in the 6+. It also my phone for the gym and doing exercise outdoors too! I like the feel of it a lot too. The yellow is just right shade - not to bright or dark! Pastel!

Brilliant idea using a 5c for weekends and an active lifestyle.

Only thing I can think is that you can't take as good of pictures of things you are doing because the camera technology isn't as advanced as it is in the newer devices.
