my boss showed me his 3G S, (financial analysts for investment banks get access to new products before the public so we can asses for ourselves how much value it will add to the company as a whole and their revenue stream)

anyways.. it's not as fast as you think, and truthfully, I can't remember anyone prior to the 3G S release complain that the 3G was "too slow"

anyways..we came up with the conclusion that the only reason apple released the 3G S was because they had to drop the price of the 3G so the Pre would not steal market share... and also, last time they dropped the price by a $100 their sales increased by 100%...

so apple wanted to increase sales, but they also wanted to have an expensive phone like the 3G S in the line up so they would not decrease sales of their "expensive" phone..

that is also why the stock actually dropped on the day of the release, because we knew a new phone was coming on June 8th, (I actually posted a thread about it a week before the 8th which I discussed the price drop and the new iphone..) but analysts expected a "new" iphone, not just the same 3G with a couple easy to install apps..and a better camera..

it's just a marketing scheme, and that is what apple is known for...

so if you currently own a 3G, you're better off waiting for one year till you buy the real new iphone.. instead of paying extra for the same phone just with a few minor differences and extra space..

The lagginess of the iPhone 3G is SUCH a pain in the ass and it's bothered me ever since I've owned it. there simply is not enough ram in the device!! go from browsing in safari for 5 minutes to opening SMS and it takes forever to launch and typing is laggy. the transitions don't work anymore, its just slow!

And the 3G is much more than slightly faster and a better camera. I have a 3G and I'm getting the 3G because I really want video recording and I've jailbroken and done it before but the quality is absolute **** that way. the camera is vastly superior, the compass can open up possibilities of Augmented Reality apps, the voice control is very useful while driving, but above all the increase in speed is what i'm looking for.
The processor is twice as fast.
There's twice as much ram.
The 3D graphics chip is WAAAAYY better than in the 3G and will be able to handle much more intense graphics.

It's not faster so your email app loads quicker. It's faster so future apps can do even better things than are possible on the 3G. Processor speed means a lot when you are allowing people to write applications for the device. We'll see far more capability in the 3GS than we have up to now.

Anandtech looks at the new 3GS hardware

"The iPhone 3GS may be a mild upgrade from a consumer perspective, but what it's going to enable is far from it; watch out Nintendo."

I can't believe someone cared so much about this tiny detail that they wrote a thread + posted in it several times. Does that mean the 8GB iPhone is inferior? Outside of the iPhone world, people don't bother with the speed of a phone's processor. They care about price. Although making a 4GB iPhone 3G S would be ideal, people would complain about going backwards since it's only 4GB. Apple is catering more to the consumer market and less of the elitists that complain about stuff like 3.0Gb SATA -> 1.5Gb SATA when our HDs and SSDs barely go over 150Mbs.

At the end of the day, computers and phones are TOOLS for various uses like socializing, photoshopping, video editing, web browsing, etc. Based on my calculations, pricing the phone under $99 subsidized wouldn't be possible for the 3G S. Just because you cut down 4GB of space doesn't mean you can squeeze in the faster processor, screen coating, graphics, camera, etc. 4GB of flash is extremely cheap vs. the latest processors, screen coatings, camera units.

i agree. lets keep in mind even the Gamecube (which delivers GREAT graphics) only has a 485MHz processor.

i know i know, things like gfx processor come into play.. but i would feel completely normal holding a wireless controller playing with my iPhone while plugged into the TV as a gaming console, as i would plugging into my N64 like i do almost nightly.

the iPhone, mixed in with it's hardware API's and upgraded processor+RAM will be a force to be reckoned with, especially if the right companies take advantage of it's power.

99 for a 8 gig 3G is a great value. I think anyone who buys one is making a wise choice. I own a 3G 8 gig and I won't be upgrading soon because I don't want to pay the full price. Sure I'd like the better camera but the upgrade to the OS satisfies me and I'm sure millions of people will be happy with the 3G.

I have never thought that my 3G was slow. In fact I think it's fast.

i agree

and we have the 2010 iphone to look forward to!

No no, wait for 2012 model, it includes 5G support, and can project holographic images.

Kidding aside, all I want is for the iPhone to implement the features that several phones have had for a few years now, and the 4G network won't be ready until 2012 by ATT's own estimates.

I'm not saying that sticking with a 3G that you already have is a bad move. But if you're signing up for a new two year contract with ATT for the iPhone, one that will cost you close to 2400 over two years, and you decide to go with the much slower, laggier less capable 3G version just to save 4% off of your total cost, when you'll be able to sell the 3GS version for a lot more money than the 3G version whenever you end up replacing your phone anyways, you my friend are a sucker.

This was probably some kind of mysterious clue...

I wonder what all of those x's mean???

I know someone who just bought a 3G, and they know the hardware differences. They know that it's $1899 versus $1999 for two years of service. They know it is 14 cents a day cheaper to get a much slower 3G versus the new 3GS. And yet, "I won't pay $200 for a phone, $100 I can do."

I totally don't understand that mentality. Completely, willingly oblivious to the total picture. It's okay to blow $75 a month on service, but an extra $100 for a much better phone is out of the question. Ouch.

why is this always an argument. some people don't need the fastest phone ever! the 3g is still very fast and at the end of the day it is a phone and it does its things fast. So what you can open you sms 2 seconds faster! wow! i don't need that. IF your going from original i see lots of benifits, but for us 3g users. i think 3.0 can hold us off til next summer!

Sorry. Not trying to start an argument. Just responding to the statement from the OP:

"And I'm actually kind of pissed at apple for offering it as an option and not releasing all the info on the 3G S's hardware during the conference itself just to take advantage of people who aren't as techinically knowledgable as we are."

Doesn't look like Apple was trying to take advantage of anyone.

It's the mentality that everyone now has "HURRRR ONLY $100 MORE YOU CAN DOUBLE THE MEMORY" about these products is what is making you not understand why people buy cheaper stuff.

Some people DON'T need a game to load 10 seconds faster. Some people DON'T need to autofocus on a caterpillar. Some people DON'T give a crap about a freakin' compass.

When the latest gen iPod nano came out in 8GB and 16GB i was going to go for the 16GB because "DURRR ITS ONLY 100 MORE!!!" then i realized i didnt really need 8 more gigs of music since i only play my current favorite songs anyways. I tell ya, it felt good to walk out that day without blowing another 100 bucks on essentially the same thing.

;)

I've been pondering about whether or not I should even purse an upgrade to the 3G S.

But I am thinking I just might stick with my 3G. Video recording is a def. a feature that most phones should have today...but I've never extensively used video recording on any of my phones to this day. But better quality pictures is always a plus.

The hardware differences matter the most to me. As long as I restart the phone when I plan on heavily using it (as in try out multiple apps, surf the web a bit, check my mail, etc. at one sitting)...no problem. A hassle? Yes. My biggest pain is with web browsing and how the phone starts to momentarily lag when I magnify and I can't do anything for a split second. Not a huge problem..but annoying.

I def. laugh at people highlighting the "improved" graphics that the 3GS can pump out. I see the gaming venture (as in a competitor to handhelds such as PSP and Nintendo) to be a failure. But for casual games and the such...the current graphics are good enough for me.

Of course, games like the Sims 3 and such will def. be a more enjoyable experience on the 3GS (as I hear extensive games crash a lot).

But it pains me not having the latest iPhone though....no doubt.

IMO the target customer for the $99 iPhone probably isn't that concerned with specs or having the fastest phone with all the new bells and whistles. Then again I may be wrong.
