I was under the impression a quick touch of action button would silence the iPhone and long hold would do something else e.g. run short cut

But according to this it doesnt

Did I misunderstand the keynote, if so why didn’t apple implement long hold for action!

I tought exact the same.

I'm still sure the action button gets improved in iOS18. The current action button doesn't make absolute no sense YET.

I thought the same too. And just came on here to ask the same question. Trying to think if they did say that in the keynote or if I saw it somewhere else.

It made sense to me that any action could be in addition to the default silence. So normal press for one, long press for the other. Could probably have a double press for a third.

I thought only long press did the action

Short press could give you some info about the action (like haptic'ing to tell you if you were already silenced or not _before_ you toggled)

I understood a long hold would be necessary to assign functions for the action button.

I actually think that it's better to have a long hold for the action button. With a long hold there is less chance of accidentally assigning a different action.

I really hope the action button gets more attention in later iOS updates. For me having a handy, dedicated button for the flashlight was enough to justify the upgrade.

Triple tapping the back of the phone was always an interesting feature, but I think most people don't know it even exists.

I thought the exact the same thing. I thought it was a way to silence the phone but also to carry out one other action. In its current form it just seems like a case of fixing something that wasn’t broken. Unless of course you never silence your phone.

I’m sure during testing Apple found that it was too easy to accidentally press it. Imagine you mapped it to open your garage and pressed it unknowingly

Na it’s just Apple being lazy, could have had double tap to silence

Until you can add double/long tap customization, it's a worthless feature/button and more susceptible to inadvertently switchnig phone between ring/silent.

I just wish a short touch would work, having to hold it awkward currently, will probably get used to it though.
