The All New HTC One (M8)

The camera isn't as bad as the internet suggests but it lags behind the iPhone and S5.

Not that it matters when most of the pics will have crappy filters and end up on Instagram anyway.

They're very nice Robster when viewed out, it's when you want to start looking at more detail such as the people on the beach or the houses in the background there simply isn't enough detail to allow that, which is the problem with landscape shooting on it.

But taken as they are with no cropping, they are ok... Just never exceptional.

Not a terrible camera, indeed I'd say software has been improved over the M7 but just neither is it a great camera.... It is what it is 🙂

Thankfully everything else about the phone for me has been improved over the M7 and is of a very high standard, and that's probably why I'm in more a forgiving mood than I was with the M7 🙂

Thanks, I made my wife drive up there on the way to visit the inlaws🙄 I just jumped out and went snap snap, I don't even know if there is settings to make the shots better.

I run my business with this phone so for me call quality/reception is my no one priority, which it is great and also the sound for speaker calls is really good.

Need to get a nice point and shoot camera.

I prefer not to use a phone on weekends. I should have another phone but don't want to pay for a line or prepaid I would hardly use.

Beautiful Beach! Holy cow! Again those pics look great at a quick glance but as soon you blow them up the images both get very distorted and look terrible. But again, what a beautiful part of the world to live in!!!

Just an honest question. Would the S5 or my iPhone 5s do any better of a job when zooming in or cropping the picture? I feel like none of the smartphone camera can really handle cropping an zooming that well. It just seems like we are asking for a lot when we are talking about smartphone cameras.

ve the HTC One M8 since last Tuesday and I couldn't be happier. I got rid of my iPhone and I don't miss it at all. This is the first time I am using Android and I am loving it. The One is an amazing device with a weakness:its camera. Everything else is top.

Just an honest question. Would the S5 or my iPhone 5s do any better of a job when zooming in or cropping the picture? I feel like none of the smartphone camera can really handle cropping an zooming that well. It just seems like we are asking for a lot when we are talking about smartphone cameras.

Honestly yes they would. If you just say took a picture with the M8 at 16:9 ratio and compared it to my Lumia 1520 16:9 ratio picture (4mp versus 16mp) there is a noticeable difference in detail and remember at 100% crop, the 16mp image is considerably more zoomed in because it's 4x the pixels than the 4mp image from the m8. So when we take the m8 image and try and zoom in to the equivalent 100% crop level of the 16mp image it's the same result as taking a 640x480 image and stretching it to 1280x960. It's just ends up looking pixelated and horrible.

Clearly an 8mp image wouldn't be as dramatic difference when cropping / zooming as a 16mp image over the 4mp m8, but it would still be better.

I actually tend to use my phone for a lot of nature or cityscape photos, especially when on vacation but also at home. And not being much of a camera buff, I really like to be able to do it with my phone and not having to mind one more device, escpecially when on vacation.

But so far I should rather say *trying* to take that kind of photos, I've only used a iPhone 4S and a Note 2 so far and neither of them do a very good job when it's time to plug into the big TV and show the photos to someone else. So, a phone camera with better abilities here would be worth a lot to me. Currently looking at the Lumia 1520 or its successor as that would also cater to my big screen fetish 😎

Everyone wants different things 🙂. Having a better higher mega pixel camera wouldn't stop folks using their camera phones for Facebook / Instagram.

But it does give other users more options / flexibility to do more than that.

Smartphones have nearly replaced the digital compact camera at this stage, and so it's only natural to want the same higher end compact camera features in our top flagship phones with the same flexibility to print our images afterwards.

It won't replace a DSLR, but that doesn't mean we should settle on ho-hum.

No they wouldn't, its all BS this camera phone comparing, they were scenery shots you don't need to zoom in, if i wanted close up of the houses or people on the beach you would use a DSLR with a zoom.
I have never printed a photo taken on ant smart phone i have owned.

No we should not settle for ho-hum, but are we calling the M8 ho-hum? I think it's better than that. Not to say its great, but nothing terrible.

I agree that I think smartphones have replaced the point and shot camera, but will they ever become a professional camera? I don't think we can expect that, or that might be a bit to ask.

I know you were talking about the zooming on the phones, but I really don't see a clear advantage of the S5 over the 5s. Yes the megapixels, but in terms of pure picture quality I have not seen a photo taken with the S5 that has a better quality than the 5s. It may be able to print out bigger, but quality I just don't see it.

We went to Bali at xmas and i made the mistake of only taking a 5S as a camera, photos look ok on phone or macbook not any bigger or blowing up to print, next time will take a real camera.
My daughter took her canon water proof camera we gave her for xmas and it took better photos. On sale for $150.

Sure, most are probably happy with shots for Instagram or FB. I'm just thinking that if I can have a 20 mp cam like the one on the 1520 for the same price as the one on the M8 - I'd go for the 1520 any day. (Provided the rest of the camera functionality is up to par of course, speed, reliability, lense etc.)

And 20 mp I think would be quite good enough for my needs. I'm not looking for pro quality or heavy cropping/zooming, or printing, just a more enjoyable experience when showing the pics on a TV or monitor.

Well, if we're talking landscape shots then that 12 mp Canon has 4 mp more than the 5S so would simply save a more detailed shot, so that makes sense.

For me personally though I really value being able to carry just the phone, rather than having an additional gadget to mind. So what I'm after is a good enough camera on a phone, that's all. And I think the 20 mp level (+ all the other qualities of the 1520 cam, separate shutter button, OIS, Nokia's photo app etc.) is where that level is hit. I don't require the quality of a proper DSLR. But the M8 just wouldn't do - I wouldn't enjoy it as much as I would a 1520 with its more powerful camera.

Anyway - we all have different needs, and I'm not looking to slam the M8 in general. 🙂 Just saying that having the best possible camera on a phone isn't a totally meaningless thing to want.
