I'm not sure (cause I don't use iTunes--I have neither a Mac or Windows, purely on Linux) but iTunes probably does this when you sync. It would be nice if the App Store used Push to provide the user with application updates.

If I'm not mistaken, the only way to check for application updates is to open the App Store.

Nope, if you are patient, a badge notifying you of the number of updates awaiting will appear. This has been so for quite some time.

Ahh, ok. I guess I'm not patient enough. I don't ever see the App Store icon with (1) or whatever but when I open the App Store, there will be an update for an app.

Maybe because I'm still on 3.0 (7A341)? Because obviously I have no way to firmware update without iTunes.

    Thanks though.

Make an account at appshopper.com and you can be notified of new updates very quickly. Also I like that I can receive notifications of updates for all my apps not just ones that are currently on my phone.

Yeah, me too. I seldom keep from checking the App Store long enough to see the badge either.

No, these notices predate 3.0, so you will get them if you just leave the App Store application alone long enough. (I don't know how long long enough is, though.)

I've had my phone since July 2008 and it has never put up a red badge without me opening the app store manually.

I often go 4-5 days without checking it. Just how long does this push technology need to work? A whole week?

    JACKPOT!!!

Finally, I woke-up my iPhone and sure enough, App Store had a Push Notification.

People, the AppStore does not have push notifications...You either have to open it manually or when you sync to your computer it will update the badges. There is no "waiting" or whatever, unless you do those 2 there will be no badges showing up.Period.

Well, I just saw a (1) badge on the App Store icon without opening it up. And I do not sync my iPhone with a computer, yet--I only use Linux, no Mac or Windows for me. I opened the App Store and sure enough, there was an update for my Things app.

So I'm not sure how it came up automatically then. Is that not a "Push Notification"? Maybe I don't understand what a push really is.

I didn't open the App Store before seeing the (1) push.

Maybe I just didn't see the update at the bottom the last time I opened the App Store, but that was a few days ago and I've definitely seen the home screen with the App Store icon without the (1).

According to Apple, it checks for updates only once a week -- or when you manually check by opening the App Store app:

    http://www.apple.com/iphone/iphone-3gs/app-store.html

"Whenever you access the App Store, it checks for updates to applications you’ve installed. The App Store also automatically checks for updates every week.

If an update is available and you access the App Store, the Updates screen appears immediately."

 I had no idea...but seriously, once a week? No wonder nobody ever noticed. Who doesn't open the Appstore at least 2 times a week? Once a week is pretty useless imo.

I'm sure this applies to many if not most of the people who haunt these forums, but not everyone is so focused on this. My wife has an iPod touch, and she usually has several applications showing on the badge for the App Store. The updates don't interest her much if the versions she has are doing the jobs she got them to do. I'd bet there are lots of users just like her.

I remember from my decade with Palm devices that surveys showed that most users never installed any third party applications at all.

Well i guess i am technically wrong then haha. But just like Vandam said, its pretty useless when its only checking once a week. I check the app store for updates at least once a day

Very true, I'm the same way. But now I guess there is some peace of mind knowing that I don't have to bring up the App Store so often.
